Gears, Axle, Locker???
« on: January 26, 2006, 05:45:19 PM »
Ive got an 01 Wrangler, 32's, going 33's and want 4.88's.  Im on a tight budget right now.   Has anyone kept the Dana 35?   Any luck with 4.88's and a locker?   What kind of locker is good for a daily driver?   Like I said, on a tight budget and can't break the bank.   Any advice would be appreciated.

You might want to tell us your budget.  Tight for some people might mean no locker at all.

As for a daily driver, a manual locker is really the only way to go with no side effects.  Manual lockers and tight budget do not go hand in hand though.

The jeep in the linked pictures  has  37" MTR's with 4.88 gears in a Trac-loc LSD/Auto-locker Dana30/35. I don't have any better pictures of him. He wheels this hard, but has a light foot to go with his 4.0L and slushbox tranny. I've been wheeling with him for 2 years now and he has done stuff that still scares me without breaking a single axle. How you drive is as important as how you build it. His results are not typical.

I've got a 97 TJ w/4.88 and LockRight in my D35. I've also got a real tired 4cyl/auto combo. I haven't gotten any ill-effects from the setup, yet. However, like you've stated, you are in a tight budget. I'd suggest you get another set of used 32's since they've been good to you and your axle. If you want to go to 33's, not much difference from the 32's. Not much if you are budget minded. Besides, as budget conscious as you state, why risk larger tires, regear and lock the D35? Hell, go with a lunchbox locker with the gears and tires you have now. See how it feels. If you break the D35, then use the budget money to repair or upgrade. If upgrade, then regear and lock for larger tires. Then get the 33's or even 35's.
Just note, it's addictive and you'll want to go bigger every time. Set yourself some limits and parameters, and stick with them. Most of the time on a TJ, you only need belly clearance anyways, so look into SYE and get a flat belly pan, run them 32's with a rear locker. See how far that gets you. Be prepared with proper tow points on the frame in case you actually need them.

Good luck.

My budget... Kinda depends.  Right now Im looking at 4.88's and a trutrac in the rear.   I was not planning on the super 35 kit or the d44.   Any advice???  Gears, limited slip, and install, should be about 1300?   As for the new tires, Ill probably wait until my 32 mtrs wear out.   Can't seem to wear them out!

Well, I'd shop around and get price quotes on the install.  Don't just call 4x4 shops,  they'll usually cost more.  Call speed shops.  Racing shops usually do gears fast and are very good at it.  Also, asks if they can cust the cost if you pull the axles out.  You could pull the brakes and shafts for them before hand so they won't need to tie up rack space.  Doing it on a bench makes the job easier too.  I know some places that charge as little as $75 an axle.

Honestly, unless you plan on keeping the D35, it's probably not the best idea to invest too much into it.  Otherwise, I'd go with a manual locker.  Something like an OX, Eaton or E-trac.  If there is a place you actually need a locker a LSD will come up short.

You can beaf up the D35 with alloy stock shafts then carry your stocks as spares.

To be honest if you are spending the money to get a truetrac installed, I would spend the little extra and get a proper locker.  You will out grow the truetrac fast and then you are back to square one.

I currently run 33s and an ARB with my D35.  I love having the selectable option, but yes it did come at a price.  If you are on a budget I would get a lunchbox style locker (cheap and zero or little install cost), and if you want to regear than that is your choice, but I would not spend the money on a truetrac, unless all you do is mud offroad.
