231j/d/c
« on: July 31, 2010, 01:56:41 PM »
Was at the junkyard and I pulled widecahain/front output/hub from main shaft from a 231d. I also pulled a 6planetary from a 241c. will these work together? I am pretty sure the 231d stuff will work. Will the 241c work or does it need to be 231c?

FYI...doing 5.2l swap and just looking for extra beef since I am pulling my 231j apart for the mega short sye...Thanks for any input

Hmm the Dodge should be a 6 gear planetary as well.  Or maybe that was just the D with the 318/360 RAM.  It should all work though.  Other then the 5 bolt front case on the C and the different tailcones, you can just about interchange everything in them till it works.

It should all work but for the 241 planetary set, not familiar with those.  I've got a 241d here but I haven't torn into it yet.

The 231j hd you are building should work well behind the v8, I run the same setup with the SS SYE and all, even added the 2lo.

The 231d came out of a a 1500 doge ram with the same 5.2l and auto trans I am putting in my YJ. And I was suprised when I pulled it apart it in the junkyard to see the 3planetary...here is a sumation of my junkyard trip from my build thread on my local jeep club board.

Trip to the junkyard was an adventurous one to say the least. Heavy rain led up to my entrance to the yard. So with clear skies and puddles abound I located a 231d under a dodge ram 1500 with the same 5.2l I am putting in my jeep. I pulled the case apart removed the front out put shaft, chain and sprocket/hub. Forgetting my tape measure I wasnt sure if it was the wide chain or not. To my suprise it only had a 3planetary gear set. I had spotted a pulled 241c in the back of a van earlier so I knew that had the 6planetary and wide chain in it. I could line the 231d next to the 241c to check chain width. On my way back to the van containing the 241c I decided to check the rest of the yard for the elusive 231hd. I crawled under numerous trucks. With no luck I made my way back to the van. Once I started disassembly of the 241c I realized that the chain from the 231d was missing.  I made short work of the 241c and happy to see the 231d did in fact have the wide chain. However now I am missing the chain. I snagged the 6planetary and tried to retrace my steps without loosing my temper.  I got to the back of the yard and turned around and sighed. And sure enough on que my makeshift tool box(only brought a small plastic box with stuff for tcases) Broke free from the handle and my tolls exploded across the ground.  Now I am pissed....But the truck next to me had a 5gall bucket in the back. So I snatched up my mess and threw the tools in the bucket. Retraced my steps some more and sure enough the chain was under a dodge I had crawled under. So yes I am an idiot. But it just goes that even an idiot can get it done from time to time.

The score.

wide chain with hubs, 6planetary gear set, long 23spline input shaft for carnuts project.

The cost. $61 and 4.5hours of aggrivation..lol

Things I learned....getting better with snap ring pliers....dont be a dumb ass..

That's one way to remove the front output :fish: LOL

A new chain is only about $70, cheap insurance against having to rebuild the case down the road.

Check with the folks at JB Conversions, they offer a 6 pinion planetary for the 231j. Maybe that's where they get it.

The planetary/sun gears in a 231 had a tooth design change ~ 1994. You can't mix the sun and planetary or they will eat each other in short order. They will seem to fit just fine but they will destroy each other. Just something to be aware of before you toss that in there.
