I may end up settling for a rear D44 with drums and the 5 lugs.   Would prefer rear discs, but it's done ok with the drums on the D35 and an EBC disc/pad and steel line upgrade on the front.

For larger tires, though, the brakes will probably need a larger master cylinder swap or something else I figure
Most D44 axle shafts, especially XJ/TJ can be bought with 5 on 4.5 and 5 on 5.5 so you can change the pattern to match once you get a D44 up front.

I run an 8.8 with 5.13's with Spidertrax spacer/adapters that pushed it out and changed BP to match my swapped in HPD44 for the front (Albeit, my front's a '76 F150 D44 and i had to have it shortened a bit so i could use rubicon shafts....

In any event, my tires are 37's.  I wish i would have went lower.  I think 5.38's would have been ideal.  Ah well.. You learn.  I don't do allot of driving so it's not a big issue.

So do any of you guys have any tips on places to score a rear Wagoneer D44 for a reasonable price?

There's a boneyard in the San Bernadino area that specializes in Jeeps and that I've visited once way back when due to emmissions-related issues -- I needed to pick up a stock airbox for CARB testing.

But as it stands now, I'm going to be forced in to phoning and/or emailing a bunch of yards with inquiries about a rear Wagonner D44.

btw what's the price range typically for an old rear D44 from a pick-n-pull type place?

$100-$200 around here.

Why not grab a d44 from a Rodeo or Passport?  Much more plentiful than old AMC iron.

So Bounty Hunter, if I'm looking at rear axles from Rodeo/Passports and find one from a '93-'04, it's definitely going to be a D44, right?  I read the year range is '93-'04 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dana_44.

I was paging through salvaged axles for sale and most of the Rodeo/Passport rear ads for those model years give you the gear ratio but that's about it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190437663931&viewitem=&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2&category=33731#ht_2299wt_939

I'm probably going to buy one locally.  But I just didn't want to end up with a Rodeo axle from '93-'04 that was from the one model year when Isuzu got a great deal on ultra-light, Chinese-made rear ends with Balsa wood housings or something.

No, they used another axle besides the d44 and I believe that axle had drum brakes.  The axle width also varied over the years so measure before you buy.  I believe my mid-90's axle is 59"ish, and late '90s they got wider like 63" IIRC.  The two common gear ratios available were 4.11 and 4.30, both thick gears on a tall ratio carrier.

Ok, I'll look out for that.  Are you running 6 lug/5.5 wheels or did you set yours up to run 5 lug wheels?

I run 6-lug wheels, several sets as they're very common.  Chevrolet 4wd and a bunch of imports use this wheel pattern.
