Extractioion Points
« on: December 06, 2010, 05:00:00 PM »
As I keep thinking about building bumpers I keep going back to an old question what is needed and what is overkill when it comes to extraction points.  I've seen bumpers/rigs built and wheeled for years w/ one tow hook in the front and one in the rear and they don't seem to have issues, I've seen rigs running 2 hooks, 4 shackle mounts, and a reciever hitch, on each end.  I don't think either of these two extremes is ideal but what is?

i would say two shackle mounts on ends of both bumpers. sometimes it helps to run two lines to pull someone out. im lookin to do the same on mine.

I think it all depends on the application.  Light recovery, I'm sure one is enough.  I'd prefer to have more than not enough.

Found some more information, (for what it's worth) http://www.offroaders.com/tech/Tow_Straps.htm

I'm sure one of the other guys have better words on this.  My 2 cents, for what it's worth.

I don't think there is any one right answer to this question.  I've got two shackle points in front and one centered in back, and no hooks.  It was cheap (all three points are just drilled and cut sections of scrap angle iron) and has worked well for me, just need to have some shackles on hand at all times.

There is really no reason to have more then 4 and you shouldn't have less then 2 (front and rear).  Choose your poison hooks or loops.  No need to have both.  If you have a rear receiver then you don't really need another point.

As for hooks or loops, I prefer loops and you can lock into them.  I actually like the Euro YJ hooks better then the horns you find in the US.  It's more like a L plate with a a half circle cut into one end (the hook) and a hole further down.  So you can pass the strap through the hole and lock it with the hook.  The later Euro hook for the TJ was a plate with a small D-ring.

I haven't seen any pictures of them unfortunately.  I just remember seeing them on a Euro-TJ Chassis they dragged around for their Jeep101.

I think the TJ's were similar to these but smaller and they sat flat against the top of the frame.
