Will GL-4 work in my AX-5?
« on: November 22, 2010, 02:01:43 PM »
I cannot find syncromesh, mt-90 or amsoil locally, but I did find a semi synthetic 75w-90 gl-4 from penzoil that I was wondering if it would work. I currentl have mt-90 in there, but th all the mud, swamps anrivers I have put the jeep in, I doubt it is in any condition to tackle the 600 mile roadtrip I will take this weekend...

No, but I understand that GL5 is the one with the MT1 rating.  GL4 does not have that designation (if I understood the FAQ correctly).

You might want to just check the oil first.  It might be OK.

*All GL lubes have some kind of Sulfur content in them (needed for the High pressure Hypoid gears in rear ends, but not necessarily needed for most transmissions.)

*Sulfur additives react to brass internal parts.

*GL-5 has twice the sulfur content of GL-4.

*AX-5 and AX-15 are Japanese manual transmissions, and the majority of manual Japanese transmissions do not recommend the use of GL-5. because of the way it reacts to brass.

*Redline MT-90 is a 75W90 GL-4.

MT-1 is not just for GL-5, it's a separate rating which means they are OK with Manual syncro'ed transmissions.  GL ratings are not backwards compatible.  The only GL-4 that would be OK would have to say GL-3/4 (aka: GL-3+) or have the MT-1 designation or say it's OK for syncro's.  This is why you can use GL-5 in a manual transmission as long as it has the MT-1 designation.  Sames goes for GL-4.

Oh and unless the oil is burn or contaminated, it should be OK.

So how can I tell if the oil is contaminated without taking it out?

Just loosen the plug and let a little drip out.  The water will be the first thing to come out.

Well, I found Quakerstate 80w-90 GL5 MT-1 today (by accident, actually!), so if I DO change the oil (now the Jeep is back at the shop with Hydro Boost issues, and I leave for Panama on Sunday morning!), I'll use that instead.  Anyone has any idea how many Quarts are needed for the AX-5?

According to Quadratec, this is what Mopar now puts in the AX15:

http://www.quadratec.com/products/52250_90.htm

Its 10W30 motor oil.  It was also mentioned it in a recent issue of JP Magazine.

Could this actually be true?

Quadratec also sells this one: http://www.quadratec.com/products/52250_91.htm  for the NV3500.
Would this also work in the AX5/AX15?

I've heard it a couple of times, but never really believed it...

I was running 20W50 Full synthetic in my YJ, had a seal fail in BF Wyoming,
the dealer changed the seal but all they had was the "real" AX lube so I went
with it. It shifted way nicer, but it is wearing out after about 12000 miles.
I pulled the plug and checked it, no particles, but its getting dark.
The synthetic was good easily for 25K. This is the 4th tranny in my YJ
either new or rebuilt in 200K and its been in there since 125K. So I'm happy with the oil.

Going back to the Redline synthetic.

I should note that when my trans was rebuilt teh last time we used all
un-shrouded bearing instead of the stock shrouded ones.

Toyotas with the same tranny came from the factory with the synthetic 70w85 Pensoil in them in 1985,
also coincidentally the only year in the 80's to NOT have bearing problems. The earlier trucks had a weak
input bearing and 5th, later ones had a new tranny that had other issues.

YMMV
