Chris's Cat (Re: BIofuels - Solution or Lie or pipe dream??)
« on: November 22, 2010, 07:01:23 PM »
Could use a Mr. Beertap right about now. Jeep could probably use a Mr. Fusion...

(Smogged my 4banger for CARB a week ago and it just barely failed due to HC at 25mph showing 45 (max 40).  I was like "alright, haven't been driving it much, technician may have a point -- just need to take it out on the highway and run it good for 50-100 miles and that should clear up the HC deal."  Take it out today and drive it 50 miles out and back -- 100 miles total.  I drove it mostly in 4th gear so revs were over 3000.  Done with that I head back to the Smog shop for my free retest.  Second go around, it tests high HC at 15 and 25mph and also high NOX at 15 and 25mph!!  Technician says that in his experience, 95% of time when a vehicle is testing high HC and NOX it's due to a bad Catalytic converter.  The unit that is on there now is OEM and it got installed 4 years (wait, maybe 6 years) ago; can't believe it's shot already)

Cats are usually only good for 10 year or so...  That was 6 years overdue.

Go with the Magnaflow/Carsound.  Here's the one I bought.  CARB legal- http://www.amazon.com/Magnaflow-39221-Direct-Catalytic-Converter/dp/B001P9ZBRC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1290484408&sr=1-2

Yeah I'll probably do the Magnaflow/Carsound.  Due to some time constraints,  going to check with nearest Magnaflow dealers and see what they have in stock locally.  Then hopefully just drive up and get one put in asap.

The one I have linked to is bolt-on.  There is a universal for a bit less but I don't think it's going to be less locally.  They're $$$.

Walking in to a $350-$400 retail price for a CARB-legal Magnaflow cat will probably change my mind about getting it locally.  You can overnight one from Amazon for way less probably.

You have a Borla so it's just clamped to the cat.  4 bolts on the down pipe and loosen the cat and you have have it swapped out in 15 minutes.  You might need to drop the muffler so you have enough room to pull the cat rearward.

Ended up ordering a Magnaflow/Carsound CARB-legal cat through 4 Wheel Parts.  Tomorrow, I'm driving down in heavy, late afternoon traffic to their big distribution warehouse/store near LAX.  Will pick it up and hopefully get it installed while I'm there.  Total was $206; sales tax took it to $226.

May get a new Flow Kooler water pump installed while down there.  Going to ship the bad one in there now back to 4wd or Quadratec -- wherever I bought it.

4wd or Qtec (or the FK factory) will probably send me a new replacement.  If any of you are interested in picking up a new Flow Kooler water pump, I'll let the extra one they'll likely send me go for a decent discount.

The above was the "idea" at least.  Turns out the cat was shipping directly from the Magnaflow factory rather than the 4 wheel parts warehouse. And it still hadn't shipped as of today (returning it when it arrives).   I called around and then bought a Magnaflow locally (probably a universal) and am planning to get it installed, along with the (already arrived) FK waterpump, down at the 4 wheel parts warehouse/store near LAX tommorow.

if it's a universal then it will need to be welded.  if you have it welded make sure the guy doesn't weld it to your muffler.  Also make sure he uses the correct welding rods.

Should have bought it from Amazon.

Didn't have any problem buying it from Amazon.  Did figure the massive 4 wheel parts warehouse would have these cats on the shelves and I could get mine fast -- drive down practically next day, pick up and install (no charges for fast-shipping) .  Looks like I was wrong.

This is the Magnaflow I ended up with:

Ok, that's the bolt-on cat.  It's not the one pictured.  You can install it yourself in 15 minutes with basic hand tools.

Got the magnaflow/carsound cat in there a few days ago and changed the O2 sensor.  Jeep passed.  It seems like the exhaust is slightly quieter now which I certainly don't mind.  Low end torque seems a bit better, too.

As for the cooling system, it turns out my radiator had been doing the leaking. It got replaced

Thanks for moving this one, Jeffy.  And the Carsound cat seems to work pretty good.  Thanks on that one too

I have one on my 99 xj for the last 4 years and one on my 01 TJ 4 cyl ... on the TJ I got the universal model (cheaper) and had to weld on an o2 sensor bung... smaller than stock and flows smooth... worth the $$$ and great compliment for an aftermarket muffler
