P.S. cooler
« on: August 17, 2010, 04:28:30 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has tried this.
I was under my jeep looking at the radiator and noticed
it had ports for a auto trans. cooler. (I have a 5 speed)
Has anybody used them for a power steering cooler ?
How hot does P.S. fluid get ?
If nothing else it will add some volume.

I wouldn't worry about it with an open diff, I'd do it if you have a locker.  I run a front spool and my steering box would get super hot on the trail.  I picked up a Hayden tranny cooler from the parts store and plumbed it into the power steering, mounted in front of the radiator.

It's done all the time.  Just make sure you plumb the low-pressure side.

My power steering unit would howl like a banshee after a little bit of tight trail running when I had the 14.50X33 Boggers on it; sometimes even locking up.  I found a cooler of some sort on a Chevy in a JY, and plumbed it into the return line.  I tie wrapped it to the backside of the grille, and it hasn't made a peep since.  You'll find that it is a cheap and worthwhile mod to make.

I'm locked up front.
After I installed a Durango box, I flushed the fluid, added some Lubegardhttp://www.lubegard.com/C-198/LUBEGARD+Power+Steering+Fluid+Protectant, and installed a trans cooler on the PS line in front of my A/C condenser. Definately runs cooler and makes less noise.

what rad do you have in there? (the coolant one) - seems to have vertical tanks (stock YJ/TJ are horizontal tanks)

Looks more like an AC condenser.
