NP231 Doubler

Just curious if anyone out there is running one, and if so how do you like it? I priced them around $550~ and kicking around some thoughts in my head and have a few questions;

1) Does the price seem reasonable? If not what would you expect to pay?

2) Is there any demand for this type of product? If reasoably priced, would you make a crawl box?

The reason I am asking is b/c I work in a machine shop and have the capabilities of manufacture one instead of buying it and thought about making a few extra.

you should be looking for a 4:1 reduction rather than the standard one, that way you get 3 reduction speeds

I run a Klune-V, which is a planetary type gear box. Like what Sharp said the 4:1 gear sets are what you would want to run with a doubler either in the T-case or the doubler.  The Rubicon 241 would be the box to use since it has the right gears, but they don't come cheap.
I love the doubler type set up. For the smaller motor they are a big advantage.
For $550 that is cheap compaired to the Klune. They are $1800+. But everything is new, not used.
There is always a bit of a demand for the doublers.

What where you thinking as far as making one? Taking a 231 and turn the planetary setup into a reduction box?
If you want to make one since you have the machines to do it try one. See what kind of time and materials you would have wrapped up in it.

There really isn't much to making a doubler other then welding or bolting on the cover plate for the backside.  Optimally, you would want a D, C or HD planetary which is a 6 gear.  Then do a Tera 4:1 in the Tcase and use the 2.72 in the doubler.  This would also give you the extra planetary and the front case needed for a doubler.

where do you buy them from (other than DD Machine), i'm interested to know - I tracked down a busted Rubi t-case with still in good shape planetary gears so I'm thinking on making a doubler out of it.

I have spoke with him on the phone a number of times. He is a good guy! If you have him your specs I would imagine he could make one.

EDIT Advanced Adapters has a number of spud shafts. That is what I am using. They might have one that will work.

cool, thanks for the info - i'll do some research, i'm not even close on needing it just want to make sure there are options in case my experiment will get anywhere (and if I end up buying that t-case of course, so far we didn't come to an agreement as far as price goes).
