Topic: years for engine exchange

Hi guys I looked for the answer to my question and no luck so here goes. My 4 squirrels in my 1995 YJ is hurt big time and with 200,000 miles on it I think swap it out will the best. What years can I replace it with? I know intake,exhaust,and other outer stuff needs to be switched, did they change intake/exhaust mounting or other stuff in newer engines I have a line on a 97 engine with 70,000miles  and hope it will work but before I pay for it I need to know . Any help will be great!!!! It also comes with the auto trans and transfer case so hopefully I can sell them and get back some of the cost.

Hmm, there should be something in the archives.  In any case, 1991-1995.5 will be a direct replacement.  For 1997, they changed the came profile a bit which dropped the HP but raised the TQ, IIRC.  You can however mix and match any of the 1984-2002 2.5L's to get something that works.  You should be able to take that TJ and swap parts with your existing engine to get it to work.  You could go about it a few different ways, depending on how much you want it to be plug&play.  If you want it 100% P&P then swap the manifolds for the YJ's.  Keep in mind that the water pump on the YJ is reverse while the TJ's is standard.

I was planning on swapping my intake/exhaust and water pump onto the new one.  Hey one more thing autotrans and manual trans should not matter ether ie. pilot hole in crank?  The reason I asked because there was an other guy with a couple engines and he said that I would have alot of trouble with a 97 engine  swap and I needed to use a 95 engine only. I didn't think I would have a problem.

Never heard of anyone have that sort of problem.  Would be dumb to have two separate blocks.

You shouldn't have to swap the water pump if you keep the TJ belt routing.  All of the accessories should be the same as well as the brackets.  If you want the YJ belt routing then you would need to swap the pump.

THANKS AGAIN!!!  I guess I will  go with the 97 motor cause it still in the jeep and I can hear it run and am going to see if I can help take it out too. The guy is swapping in a V6 so I think I should get alot of stuff with it. I will keep you posted.

91-95 has an extra temp sensor on the cyl head compared to the TJ head, other than that what Jeffy said.

Oh and you'll have to swap the engine mounts.  The ones that attach to the block.  TJ's are different.

It's in and running great!!! Had a little problem with the cam sensor/ dist.assy. dropped it in one tooth off. Got it in right now and it runs great. The best thing is the engine that I got was a Mopar remand. unit dated 1999 so it has less miles on it that first thought of 72,000 miles.  THANKS JEFFY for the info!
