Anyone know about YJ rear track bars?
« on: March 28, 2006, 02:20:13 PM »
I haven't had a "working" track bar under my 'YJ since I bought it from the looks of it. What will this do? My '01 Ram didn't have one of these things and it had leaf rear suspension.  What is it there for and should I take the old bent one out while I wait to order a new one?

the track bar basically stops the axles from shifting side to side.  When i installed my exhaust i had to remove mine, b/c the pipe rattled against it.  When i took it out i noticed absolutly no difference.  All my friends with jeeps also dont have track bars in the rear.  I see no reason to order a new one, or to have one really....

No need on a YJ...  Huge need on a TJ.

It does (maybe) help on axle twist...  I wouldn't keep it...

actually the real reason they're there is not to locate the axle but to stiffen the suspension.  This was after the huge fiasco with 60 Minutes doing a segment on how Jeeps roll over.  The front trackbar does some other things though,  It helps reduce bumpsteer once you start lifting it.  (Do a search on bumpsteer).  Depending on the suspension stiffness you can either get rid of both or run just the front.

Get rid of it... I have not had one for 4 yrs on mine.. Also let the rear axle and springs flex a bit better..  No trac bar front or rear on mine...   Just leans a bit more in the corners...  But its ok..

Currie did not even install a bracket on my D44 for the rear of my YJ they told me that the only reason the factory installes a rear track bar is like jeffy said the govement said so for safety reasons.

I am pretty sure the TJ's keep theres on at all times.. Otherwise there axles would come out from under there jeeps..  Correct me if I am wrong..
Now I know they disconnect the sway bars on them..

Yup, TJ's keep the track bars on but you can get disconnects for the swaybars.

I run a trackbar on the front of my Jeep to help with bumpsteer.  I'm holding off till I get a D44 before I fix it right.  SOA hard braking and you go stage right wither you want to or not.

Cool, thanks alot guys.  I seem to remember that whole thing about tippy jeeps and the Gvt. endorsed action to "correct" them.  I'm ditchin' the dumb thing then.  I'll probably get even stiffer springs in my lift kit when it's time to do that, so I ain't worried.  Thanks again!

Pull it and scrap it, haven't had mine on for 5 years now.  Haven't seen a change,  pulled the front out too.  Only saw a change when the front one was pulled and driving on the highway.

I gas-axed it a week or so ago, no noticable difference except the lack of clunk!  Thanks for the advice!
