This sounds like it is just one lifter.  Its not all of them making the noise. 
Well, it probably stuck.  You might try running a cleaner like SeaFoam though the engine before changing the oil.  Otherwise yank the lifter and look at it.

+1 on the marvel oil unless the engine is really dirty,
its good at cleaning crud off and if the engine is too dirty
it may be too much. But at that point it may not matter... <grin>

You should always change the fluids when you're unsure of the maintenance done by the PO.  Substitute 1/2 quart of oil with ATF when you do an oil change, should quiet the lifters nicely.

With my engine the 15W50 Royal purple quiets it way down. And its not lifters in my case its just teh general engine noise, the synthetics usually clean a motor out pretty well, sometime till they spooge is gone off the seals then the front and rear main leak.. Oh well  :confused:

That was kind of my thing about switching to synthetic on an engine with this many miles.
