problem shifting tcase after terraflex BL install
« on: June 19, 2011, 05:06:41 PM »
Installed a 1" body lift yesterday. Kit came with a transfer case adapter plate which i tried installing as per the very vague directions provided by terraflex. Now it wont shift into 4wd as it is supposed to. the directions indicated holes to use if there was a tcase drop on the truck, and holes to use if there wasnt. but either way, they didnt seem to line up. i can shift into 4wd but only in Neutral. In drive, there is too much resistance to pull the shifter back. Im actually not sure if im in 4high or low, cause the shifter is sorta half up but the 4wd light is on.
here are pics of the t-case adapter plate:

It looks pretty good from what I can tell.  The important thing is that the bell-crank (horizontal part of shifter between transfer case & tub) is as horizontal as possible.  Sounds like you simply need to adjust the linkage.

Loosen the adjustment bolt so the linkage rod slips through smoothly.  Manually throw the transfer case in 4lo by moving the flat bar attached to the transfer case.  Move the shift lever to 4lo & tighten the adjustment bolt.

Ditto on what Bounty Hunter stated. There is 2 other solutions with slight cost. Advance Adapters and several others now make cable shifters. Its all cable. That would probably run at $150 may be more. For about $75, you can get a bracket that removes the dependency on the floor mount. You still have all the stock bell crank mechanism, just that there is a 'L' bracket that comes off the trans/tcase flange and supports the bell crank.  Skyjacker and Advance I know sell them. There are probably more now adays. I run the Skyjacker for 5 yrs with no issue. I lost the floor mount with the drop bracket when my trans mount decided to break.

Something about the way i positioned the adapter plate is what is throwing it off, i believe. The inside screw hasnt been tightened all the way yet (ran out of daylight/patience/time when i was putting it together). Im gonna try and square that first and see. But i think it isnt positioned correctly. The plate isnt supposed to move right? (it has two screws bolting it to the frame-which u cant see in the pic). Ill loosen it up and try as Bounty said and see how it goes.
Also felt a lot of knocking about from center-rear of the jeep when i took it for a ride. Perhaps need to re-torque everything.
Wont be home till october, so ill have to save this thread so as to refer to it when i get home.

From this picture

I think you are missing a bushing at the end of the bell crank shaft. This shaft is what goes into the floor bracket. I think there is some kind of plastic or heim-type bushing to keep the rod off the bracket. This could be your noise maker.
The drop bracket you added shouldn't move. The floor bracket is held onto the floor through 4 rubber mounts. This keeps the vibes down since its the floor.
