Filling tank Problems

Anybody else have this problem, it likes to burp back.  Keep telling the attendants here to run it slow but they never listen.  Then we have a law here of no Toping off.  So as soon as it burps they shut the pump off and will not continue to fill it.  Left last night from one place pissed pulled in on fumes and left with 1/4 tank.

  By the way this is Oregon we cannot fill our own vehicals, can fill the Bike.  But did that even before it was ok by the law.

Jeep has a body lift, but the hose is not kinked its a straight shot.

Filling mine up, it always "burps" fuel.  At today's prices, I probably leave 40-80 cents worth of fuel on the gas station concrete every time I fill up...  Should probably do like Mad Max and catch the runaway fuel with a hub-cap and some rags, then squeeze the recovered fuel in to a long funnel inserted in the nozzle.   :bandit:

I have to fill mine as slow as I can. To fast and the pump shuts off. I have found that finding a station with the old style pump nozzle helps a bit. Those are few and far between now days.

The vent tube is probably blocked or kinked.

my 95 wrangler has the same issue. Unless I hold the nozzle in a straight position it won't let fuel in without acting like I'm topping off. I have no lift and hoses aren't kinked. Lucky for me, we pump our own. :nono:

Mine did it before the lift.  Hoses are straight not kinked and not pluged.  I was hoping somebody had already figured what to do and had a fix.

is your tank 15 or 20 gallon,

only thing i can think of is the tube going into the tank for the 15 gal version (which is the same tank as the 20 jus this tube is the difference sticking in lower).

you can turn it into a 20 gal tank, there's a writeup somwhere on this site i think. there's a tube on the overflow of the tank that goes in about 3'' (i think, can't remember exactly), removing that will turn your tank into a 20 gal and probably fix your filling issue.

the other thing is the pumps I have seen (and that is valid for both the Jeep and the Camaro i have) are "clicking" full when you squeeze the handle all the way, very few don't. Most of the ones that have the hold feature (they removed that in BC/Canada btw so i only see it in the US whenever i go to fill up with cheap gas) would auto-stop right away if i set them to max, if i set the handle to 1/2 would fill up no problem (but takes twice as long), but this is not overflow related but the small fillneck on the tank as it won't be able to bleed fast enough and would trigger the stop on the pump.

Mine clicks off pretty quick without getting more then a gallon in.  This all started happening after I cut out the holes for the taillights.  The weight of the pump handle flexes the body a little and it clicks off the pump almost instantly.  Best thing to do is rotate the pump handle so it's at a 45*.  Then it should fill till it's full.  You'll want to be paying attention to it though.  Listen for the tone of the gas entering the tank to change.  I haven't bothered to fix mine.

my YJ did it with the 3" body lift on it and i yanked that out and it hasnt happend since. i also know that there is a TSB on i believe TJ's or LJ's for having the burp at you. best bet if its the body lift is to get a longer fuel hose and route it as smooth as possible and when pumping for the time being dont hold the gas trigger at full blast. i always hold it about half way up. hope this helps. i know when i first boung my body lift it never came with a new filler hose  but i can almost bet it will be that.

Try rotating the pump handle so it's coming in from the side.  Or else hold it in and don't let it drop down so the nozzle is resting on the top of the filler tube.  Then means you'll have to hold it so it doesn't jump out though.
