Mine clicks off pretty quick without getting more then a gallon in. This all started happening after I cut out the holes for the taillights. The weight of the pump handle flexes the body a little and it clicks off the pump almost instantly. Best thing to do is rotate the pump handle so it's at a 45*. Then it should fill till it's full. You'll want to be paying attention to it though. Listen for the tone of the gas entering the tank to change. I haven't bothered to fix mine.
With 45* you're talking turn the nozzle 45 degrees from its usual, perpendicular-with-the-concrete position? Just checking here.
Had to fill-up today and tried rotating the handle part of the nozzle about 45 degrees to the left. Admittedly wasn't paying attention to the flow sound. Still didn't cut off.
