What bell housing do I have here
« on: August 21, 2011, 12:57:35 AM »
Today I pulled motor trans and transfer case from my 1991 yj. in preparation to install motor and trans out of a 97. I got the jeep Saturday so I don't know much or anything about its history.

i have the 2.5 and a ax5 but this bell housing idk what it is. I first noticed the difference when I started to unbolt my slave cylinder line. 2 seconds into the process I realized that that this was an external slave. Unless I'm completely wrong my 1991 2.5 should have an internal slave. So I compared it to the 1997 trans and bell housing and its an ax5 but the bell housing its different but seems to have the same bolt pattern and the slave is on the passenger side rather than the driver like the 97 has the slave itself is also totally different than the one on the 97 it has a plastic line at the master and the right above the trans it had some kind of fitting or something that looks like a fuel filter but i've never seen anything like it on a clutch slave line. Then the line turns into a hard metal line.

Any ideas? or is this normal or a common swap and i've just managed to never see this information.

interesting, i thought the 91 had internal slave. Are you sure it's an AX5?

EDIT: I wonder if the bellhousing and maybe transmission also was swapped out of another vehicle.

Looks like the old-school external slave found on earlier AX5's and AX4's, around '87-'89.  Pretty sure '91 YJ should've been internal slave.

1991-1993 should be an internal slave.  Swapping to an external isn't really a big deal is is somewhat common.  The externals are better since you don't have to take the transmission out to change the slave.

as stated above someone must have gotten sick of the internal slave and swapped to external. that is a swap I would love to do. internal slave has given me problems since the day I got the jeep.
