whats the best 2 inch lift?
« on: March 10, 2006, 03:48:21 PM »
Just thought I would query the masses and ask what you guys thought was the best budget 2 inch lift for a TJ.  I'm just looking for something minor to go with 31's next time tires are due.
Is a spring spacer type kit a good choice? or should I be looking at a kit that actually replaces the stock springs with something slightly taller?  does this size lift necessitate any changes to driveline angles/transfer case height?  would this lift require modifying any t-case linkage?

are there any other options I'm overlooking?  a quick breeze through quadratec rendered a couple sub-$300 spring spacer kits that seem like an alright way to go, but I want something that is going to hold iteself together without breaking anything in the long term.  what should I be looking at?
I took a 3 inch body lift off of this jeep when I got it because I hated what it did to the look, trans/t-case linkage, steering, and everything else.
thanks in advance for the input.

Well, if I was going to do a budget boost, I might be inclined to go with the ACOS adjustable spacers.  They're not cheap but they will allow you to adjust the suspension once you start adding winches and other things.  Not to mention correct for body lean caused by engine torque.

Otherwise, I'd go with spacers over coils since you can easily remove them if you want to.

me i wouldnt do any suspension lift.  get a 2 inch body lift.  your done.  dont have to worry about ride, suspension, nothing.  just lift the body and thats it.  cost = under 150bucks.  install time =1-3 hours depending if you know how to take a bolt out and rteplace it with a new

It might be more than what you're looking for, but I actually went with Old Man Emu springs.  They're $75 each (I think that's what i paid at the time) but you're looking at some of the flexiest springs out there.  They actually give anywhere between 2.5-3" (I got right in the middle, 2.75).  I went with actual springs instead of spacers because I knew I wasn't going to want to upgrade.  I'm actually planning a 1" body lift, but that's because I want one of the tucked t-case skid plates.

4WD Hardware also has 2" springs, I think they are $400 for the kit (I spend $700 on mine because I got a front trackbar instead of drilling holes), with shocks and other stuff.

Personally, if I had to do it again, I'd get the OME again!  They flex so much I have to be careful to not rub the fenders when I get near full flex (stock bumpstops).  It doesn't happen that often, but when you only have 31" tires it's nice to know you have the extra flex for harry situtations... so far, I've been in only 1 situtation where the springs didn't flex enough, but it just so happened no one made it through the up hill either.

On the other hand, if you plan (or even have the thought in the back of your head) on upgrading later, get a budget boost kit, period!  You really don't want to pay for springs twice.

With any lift you're going to have to worry about the driveline.  When I did my lift, I had both axles significantly shift (I used a adj trackbar in the front and a bracket in the rear, with plans for a new trackbar too).  I also had to use the t-case lowering kit, and I've heard that this is pretty much a hit or miss thing, some people need it with 1" lift, others have 3-4" and don't use it.

well, it is starting to look like the spring spacer kit is the way to go.  just for what I do and how much I'm willing to spend it seems like the only practical solution.  so what my next question to pose is, what else do I need to keep everything lined up?
should I look at a transfer case drop? adjustable track bars front and back?  longer drop links?  I want some lift, some slightly larger tires, and not have to worry about damaging anything due to prolonged use.  I want it to be as well done as if it came from the factory that way.  Though I suppose if thats the case, I'd probably be better off to be buying the bigger springs.  anyway, the input so far has been really helpful, just trying to squeeze a little more out.
thanks!
