Just a little Hint Check
« on: October 06, 2011, 06:57:12 PM »
Check your back Valve cover Bolts.  Thought I had a rear main starting to leak.  Did not see oil coming from up top.

But today Started to pull the head to get the rear Bolt removed and will get the head gone thru.  So when pulling the valve cover the front and passenger side was good and tight ,rear drivers and the one in the back all I needed was an Extension and socket to remove the bolts.  Turned the ext with my fingers they were so loose.

if you have the plastic valve cover be sure not to over tighten then either.. then it will crack and really leak everywhere, previous owner learned that one the.. actually he didn't learn but it happened.  :yuno:

his is 94 so that's  aluminum cover.

on another note, the gasket seating area on the head is not machined, just rough as it came from the casting process (at least that's how the spare head i have is, pretty lame thinking whoever design it if you ask me), i would use rtv at least on that side when installing the new gasket.

Have to see what type of Gasket comes in the Kit.  Know My book suggest RTV slightly set up as the gasket to use.   That sort of what my Old Factory one looks like

you mean just rtv instead of a gasket? you can't really do that with your valve cover and head (don't see how it can work), once you clean both up you'll see what i mean. not sure if you use the Haynes manual but i had one which went in the garbage as it was really inaccurate and useless - the FSM is much better.

Thats what Mine had on it was rtv.  I have never had it off so think it was Factory.  Also they did not use very much.  Kind of weird but it only stuck a little bit to the valve cover, but even peeled off of there real easy.

yes, you need to use rtv on the gasket, what i meant before was you can't use just rtv without the gasket.

Mine had only RTV no Gasket.  Will be putting a gasket on it when It goes back in.

i meant to say doublecheck last night but didn't want to sound like a  broken record , there are some raised footings on the back of the valve cover and that makes it too far/thick for just rtv.
