How hard is itto take out the heater and then back on?

I am still getting some hot air from under the dash, and I think something is not working right with the vents around the heater core.  I am considering taking the whole thing out to work on it, but I want to know what I am getting myself into before I do.  Bythe way, for those that are wondering, there are two reasons I have decided to keep the heater (considering the local temperatures):

1. Sometimes we go wheeling in the mountains, and when itrains, it ca get cold nough that you want to runthe heater to get back to that nice, non-freezing-my-nuts-off feeling.
2. When wheeling in mud, if the radiator get a bit clogged, the heater is a nice way to help it cool the Jeep until you can clean it up.

I had a link I cannot find.  But do remember two things.

1. Remove the Radio Antenna Trust me it does get in the way.

2.  One nut you need to remove is behind the valve cover.

  Now that I'm thinking about it remove the  Battery tray there is one or 2 nuts hidden there.

Just me I would order a new Core before starting just pulling the hoses off broke mine up.  I would also think about heater motor upgrade the recommended one is somewhere on this web Site.

Thats all I remember for now will see if I can find that site.

Got it, I would read the whole thing cause little tidbits come up all thru it.  Just keep notes of good points.  This makes it much easier.

I'd first check the simple stuff.  The cables and vacuum lines.  Although that's going to be a PITA with the AC evaporator in the way.  The vacuum lines are attached to the top of the heater/vent levers.  There should be a green vacuum line that goes into a plastic manifold.  There should be 3 ports and only two lines.

If you have to drop the duct, hopefully there is enough slack in the AC lines that you can disconnect the evaporator and get it out of the way.

I'll try the line route first.  Maybe there is a vacuum leak there.  I have some silicone vacuum lines in my garage, so I can just change them if needs be...  Provided there is enough space to do so anyway!

If I would have remembered you have AC I would not have said a word.  That is way different than my simple heater core only Jeep. :truck:

If you need room, you might try removing the smaller gauges and coming in from the top.

IIRC, there is enough room to put my arm in there; that should be enough to replace the hoses, which I fear may have cracked.  I'll just put the silicone hoses in there and forget about this issue...  Then if THAT does not fix the problem, the dash will have to come down...   :brick:

I actually thought about that; but there are 2 issues I see:

1. It would have to be a bronze valve so that it will not break with all the offroading, but this worries me because now you have a hunk of bronze swinging around in your engine bay (and pulling your cooling lines all over the place).
2. Also, this is a band aid and does not fix the real problem; the OEM system used to work just fine, so it should be able to work fine once again.

i'm thinking of adding that to mine, even with the flap fully closed and sealed the air still travels around the heater which is extremely annoying in the summer (you can actually tell the difference in air temp)

That's the problem I am having; when driving from Panama to Costa Rica (or back), outside temp is ussually in the high 90's, and with the heat coming in, it's hard for the AC to keep up...  But it used to seal well before, so I dont know why this is now happening...

can't remember but i think you should have it on off and will close both the vents and the heater, your A/C recirculates the air inside the cab (although that's a problem if you just had some beans for breakfast :lol:)

In theory, yes, havig it on OFF should close the vemts, but the reality is that there is still hot air escaping somehow...  And if I put it on VENT you feel the heater even more, so it is defenetly something the the heater door, I think...

Sounds like mine and all it was,  was the cable was slipping and not fully closing the flap in the housing.  Or you could have something holding it part way open.   


  There is also a seal on the heater core that could have gone bad.  Know mine was in bad shape.
