Busted Motor Mount Bolts
« on: April 04, 2012, 09:59:54 AM »
Driver side motor mount bolts all sheared off in the block last night. At least it happend in the Home Depot parking lot and I went inside and got some metric M10-1.5x30mm bolts needed. I'm limping on one bolt until I can pickup a buddy's right angle drill and extract the other two tonight. Did some research and looks like this is a common deal.  I just order a Brown Dog motor mount kit which uses 6-7 bolt into the motor rather than only 3 the oem bracket uses - it'll be here within 10 days.  I'll snap some pics and post them soon. BTW, Karol at Brown Dog is awesome.

$314 vs $15?

I hate poly mounts.  They transmit too much vibrations to the body.  If it's a daily driver then I'd pass.  Honestly, I'd just replace the mount and be done with it.

I'm already running the bomb proof more engine mounts. The 3 bolt bracket that attaches to the block is what broke free - the engine side bolts snapped. Brown Dog actually is giving me a discount if I send them the old mounts. I'm basically getting the engine mounts for free. What I really need is the bigger bracket. I also spoke with them, and there's a rubber upgrade kit incase the poly is too rough/loud.

The oem holes is what busted on mine - two upper holes still have broken bolts in them. The other holes should be were the new brackets attach.

$250 for the Brown Dog brackets and trade in on the engine mounts
$28 for a drill at HF since no one I know close by has one
$5 in bolts (to fix it for now)
$50 for a 16" Perma-Cool 2950CFM electric radiator fan off CL and $43 for a Derale contorller from Amazon (broke the shrowd when the motor flopped - good reason to upgrade)
$50 on a Cobra CB 29 NW LTD with antenna off CL
$60 in front lower and upper arm bushings - the knocking been driving me nucking futs.

Its another Just Empty Every Pocket month. ;) Glad I got 21 hours of OT.

The bolts only needed a light coaxing to get them to come loose. The punch to set the drill bit starting point and the WD-40 I sprayed to save my drill bit really loosened it more than anything. Now, as long as I keep it on four wheels I'll be ok until the brackets come.

Honestly, I'd probably just fix it be done.  Also, if you used a reverse cut drill bit it probably would have unscrewed on it's own.

I just don't want to ever have to deal with that again. Doubling the mounting bolts should make the weak link somewhere else. Everything else were things I was planning on attacking this month. It just unexpectedly doubled.

Also, I did hear a loud pop launching up onto a path last weekend. I know what the pop noise was... initially. The speed bump must of popped the last bolt.

maybe they broke b/c you have poly bushings. btw, if i'm not mistaking those bolts saying 8.8 are equivalent to grade 5, i think the 10.9 are the grade 8 similar strength (or 10.8, can't remember exactly).

Probably broke from me driving it stupid. Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt. I got that suspension and I have this dumb impression that it'll hold up.  :truck:

My guess is that the bolts might have loosened a little and that's why they snapped off.  What grade were the original bolts?

The top of the bolt was 8.8.  What matched closest was (3) M10-1.5x30mm, but they were a few mm shorter. 35mm was too long. Thanks for the grade info, I was wondering what the numbers ment.
