Bought a used Warn XD9000i winch today
« on: April 23, 2012, 09:25:30 PM »
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261005363389?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_6492wt_1126

Paid $560.  Thought it was going to be just over $500, but somebody got going at the last minute and drove the price up to $560

Guy who sold it has sold a lot of stuff, so the winch could effectively be in ok/operable condition as listed.  My bet:  probably have to replace the motor, wires to the battery.

It didn't include remote, fairlead or anything, so that's more  out for that, too.  No winch mount plate thrown in either.  Shipping was rolled in though...

So you guys think I paid too much for the thing (especially without knowing more details about it)?  :digdeeper:

Well, I would have checked the local craigslist.  There are always winches for sale, especially in CA.

The wire insulation doesn't "wear off".  I suspect you'll be spending +$100 for a new remote and at least that much on a new cable.  A Hawse Fairlead would be cheaper then a Roller which would be around $100.  I doubt the motor is bad but you're looking at +$150 for a new motor.  A winch plate will be around $100 for a Warn or $50-70 for an off-brand.

It's maybe worth $350.

At least the mechanical is lifetime warranty. It couldn't be too tore up. Looks like they're selling another too. You'd need to buy a plate and any used winch probably needs a new line anyhow. I'd say it was an ok deal, considering you paid no shipping. I'd bargain shop for the other components if it were me. Amazon, Craigslist, etc. I'm el cheap'o.

Harbor Frieght carry's cable's and mounts too.

If I had years of expertise, could see doing Craigslist -- you show up locally, examine the item, it works ok, then you buy probably for less than auction.

If it doesn't work when you test, don't assume the motor is bad.  It is more common for the soleniods (electrically operated switches) to go bad.

http://www.harborfreight.com/universal-channel-winch-mount-90476.html

In most cases they won't warranty a winch without a recept of some kind.  Although I doubt the mechanicals are damaged.  Most of those XD9000i's were dumped when the new HS9500 came out.  Someone probably made money dumping it off at a pawn shop.

$35 for less then $6 worth of cable and some $1 connectors.  Better to buy some #2 from a welding supply which is an actual #2.  Get the fine braid so it's super flexible.

Amazon has some good deal though;
http://www.amazon.com/WARN-26502-M8000-8000-lb-Winch/dp/B000182DYM/ref=sr_1_3?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1335292033&sr=1-3

Well if you're going to use todays price then yes, it will be cheaper.  But Warn overprices their winches.  At least for the regular line up. Like I said before many were dumped when the new HS came out and you could scoop them up for $5-600 all day long back then.  With the VR line-up it makes no sense to be buying used unless you're looking for a sub-$500 winch.  Even the M8000 is still a pretty good deal.  There are a lot of offroaders in CA so finding a deal is just a waiting game if one doesn't show up immediately.

If I had years of expertise, could see doing Craigslist -- you show up locally, examine the item, it works ok, then you buy probably for less than auction.
Well, you didn't want a suger coated answer.  You could have asked on the forum before buying.  Even at $500 it wasn't a deal.  You shouldn't have gotten caught up in the bidding.

Craigslist is more like how people used to buy and sell things before there was an internet.  They were called Classified Ads.  You don't need much experience.  Most have pictures and you can call the seller.  Drive over and if it's not to your liking, you can walk away.  It may not be as easy as clicking a button but the buyer has all the power and can walk away at any time.

At least you could save $100 by wiring up a dash mounted switch instead of replacing the remote though.  Beware that ATV winches aren't the same.  Not to mention, the new controllers use a different plug then the old ones.

I'd look for someone who's removed their steel cable for synthetic and haven't even used it.

Guess I am banking on Warn's reputation and the XD9000i model's mostly decent owner reviews.  If this winch turns out to be used "bad news," I'll settle for fitting it with a new motor or whatever it needs, or get Warn's people to service it to get it working or whatever, and just take the hit.

Now see your point, Jeffy:  http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/pts/2929073991.html
Same Warn XD9000i model, but apparently with all the factory accessories and little in the way of use.  And seller conceivably drops the price to get somebody to take it off his hands.

So, yeah, probably would have made the drive to at least see that one locally in WLA

Didn't see much else in my area -- LA, OC, SF Valley, San Gabriel, Ventura, currently though.  Does look like Warn accessories, new cables are for sale nearby though, so will probably look in to those.

--

I dig Craig's List, but I don't mind paying Ebay prices for a degree of security.

I get a bad XD9000i in this case,  I've got 7 days to return it, and am out a parking ticket's cost for return shipping.    Also, rightly or wrongly, most of the ebay sellers that I've encountered have done freaking cartwheels to correct problems with a purchase and reverse negative feedback.  Then Buyer protection, etc.

With Craig's List (or local classified ads of past and present) its all too easy for a local seller puke who's moving after his/her apartment lease runs out in a few weeks to unload a problematic car, appliance, power tool, computer/electronics gear on a local buyer with assurances along the lines of:  "hey, if there's any problems with it in the next 30 days, just bring it back -- I'll refund your money (...ha, sucker...I'll be kicking it in the next timezone with your money is what I'll be doing..."  :naughty:)

Aware of other  "Classified-ad" (and presumably "Craig's List") scam maneuvers with unfortunately well-proven track-records, but see it is 3AM -- means I've got to get up

 :pot:

Most of those XD9000i's were dumped when the new HS9500 came out.

The linespeed on the XD9000i and the M8000 are around 40ft minute.  You maybe not satisfied with your current M8000s unloaded linespeed, Jeffy?

$35 for less then $6 worth of cable and some $1 connectors.  Better to buy some #2 from a welding supply which is an actual #2.  Get the fine braid so it's super flexible.

I agree, that's one way to look at it.  Me, am in the old-guy-with -a-little-money-and-a-lot-of-time-demands demographic

But Warn overprices their winches.  At least for the regular line up. With the VR line-up it makes no sense to be buying used unless you're looking for a sub-$500 winch.  Even the M8000 is still a pretty good deal.

Maybe they do overprice.  But, if they're on the hook for the lifetime warranty, they have to have the resources to make good.  Sure, the pricing is higher than it probably needs to be to do that though.

VR line is good.  I've read some claim the parts are chinese and assembled in the US; I don't have any problem with that. The people in the US doing the assembly at Warn probably own warn winches themselves and put them together to work (and chuck parts that aren't up to spec.).

VR or M8000 or XD9000i, the unloaded linespeed is roughly 40ft minute or less. M8274-50  and 9.5cti are faster.  I guess linespeed is why people were allegedly trading their XD9000is for the HS9500s.  Ok, but 40ft or less is still roughly par for the course with most current Warn models.  If you think your winch is slow, maybe you're going too fast?  Maybe you're a sponsored drive on the clock?  Maybe you should buy a synthetic cable that's lighter, maybe more flexible, maybe easier to unspool and rewind once you are out of a ditch?

40 ft per minute is pretty fast when you look at the super cheap winches on the market.
I have a M8000 and can't complain about line speed. I would buy one again.

I don't any any issues with my M8000 and actually prefer it over the 'i'.  Mine uses the older motor/ old HP rating before they changed the rating to boost numbers.

I'm sure you saw all of the XD9000's being sold off when the HS's came out as well.  Everyone wanted the HS's.

I think I like the looks of "I" series better than the ones with external boxes for the switches. But it's easier to service the exposed boxes if there is a problem.
To be honest when I was in the market for a winch I didn't look at any used ones. I thought I got a pretty good deal from Mike at the Rockshop. I don't remember what I paid, it's been about 8 years. Maybe in the $500 range for the one with the hawse fairlead. Maybe it was cheaper, I really don't remember.

If you mount the solenoid box under the hood, they looks super low-profile.  Not to mention, less chances of the box getting damaged.
