Need Muffler Advice
« on: May 14, 2012, 12:44:36 PM »
I installed a Dynomax 17345 Exhaust System over the winter and just started to drive my Jeep more often.   The was a 146 dollar cat back system.   It all fit fine no issues, however, the sound is a lot 'Rice Burner" than what I want.   I would like a much quieter muffler.   Any suggestions?   I want a more stock sound.

do you have your cat still on? is it gutted or removed? if the latter then will make it quieter with a proper cat installed.

I replaced my cat at the time I put on the Dynomax 17345 Exhaust System  I really liked that rebate.  To me Its not really that loud and for sure does not sound like its got a fart can on it.  Its a deeper rumble.

i have a magnaflow straight thru glasspack, it's not loud but i replaced the cat when i installed the muffler and tailpipe (all 2.5'') - it's a little louder than stock but absolutely reasonable and while short shifting it's as quiet as stock, noise goes up past 3000rpm but it's still not too bad. My guess is the cat is probably broken inside.

It has the cat  and it,s not gutted.   I liked it for a day or two then it seemed to get loud.   It more of a loud drone sound to me.  I need some thing quieter.

most quiet one would be a stock or stock-like. Like i said, mine is acceptable but that depends on what you find loud (never use dynomax so i can't compare). Magnaflow is fairly quite imo given the fact that it is a straight thru glasspack.

I had the Dynomax cat back as well. I also have a magna flow cat. I got rid of the muffler within months. I went with a Walker "quiet flow" muffler. It was a better choice but not quite stock sounding.

Flowmaster makes some fairly quiet stainless steel mufflers these days.  My Dad has one on a truck of his.

Quiet mufflers don't come to mind when you think Flowmaster, but I guess the company is trying to make inroads selling after-market exhaust parts to a broader market.

I think I getting close to what I need here!  Did the Walker fit directly using the Dynomax pipe from the converter and tailpipe?

Yes, the Walker was a direct fit. Just make sure you get the same diameter and offset inlet/outlet. I will have a look at mine later this evening.

I read that you have a stock cat. I would think that with the stock cat and a Walker Quiet Flow it would be closer to sounding stock than my magnaflow cat/walker muffler.

I had Dynomax, it was too loud, had very loud drone/buzz sound. I went with Banks,it was a little better, not as loud and a bit deeper. The thi6cyng is, the aftermarket exhausts never sound as good on our 4bangers as they do on the 6cyl

Yes!  Exactly the sound I'm getting from my Dynomax.  It has NO pleasing tone to it.    I just want to go back to quiet(er).    Interesting,  I e-mailed Walker and they still have not responded.

Walker response just arrived!

"Thank you for your inquiry for Dynomax Exhaust.  We appreciate your interest in our products. I am sorry but we do not have an Quietflow muffler that will fit in the place of the 17731 Super Turbo muffler that was in the 17345 kit. The only thing I can recommend would be to return the kit under the 90 day safe and sound guarantee to the original retailer and then put on an OEM style system listed below."

I was not aware that Walker owns Dynomax....or vis-versa.

neither, they're both Tenneco brands along with a bunch of others. Walker is the OEM replacement, Dynomax is the performance division
