'01 Dakota 2.5 in to '94 YJ.
« on: April 15, 2013, 07:37:42 PM »
Hi, i picked up a 2.5 out of an '01 Dakota for dirt cheap to replace my knocking YJ 2.5.  Does anyone know what i'll need to change to make it work?

Thanks!

intake/exhaust manifold, motor mounts, brackets, all sensors (oil pressure, PCM water temp in thermostat housing - not sure if the housing is the same so you might need to replace the whole thing instead) & distributor (connector is different for the cam sensor) and possibly waterpump (i'm not sure on this one but never heard a definite answer on it). You'll also need to relocate the temp sensor for the gauge cluster located on the cyl head in the YJ (or drill and tap the head in the same location). the oil pan might give you some trouble if your exhaust downpipe is routed between the oil pan and the transmission belhousing so if you need to replace it you also have to swap the oil pump pickup.
I'm not sure about the clutch, have a look at it make sure the splines match and the pressure plate height is the same (the bellhousing in the Dakota is about 1'' deeper than the on in the YJ AX5, pilot bearing could also be a problem, i have no idea if the AX15 in the Dakota has the same input as the AX5 - if you have doubts and want to keep  it simple use the ones from your YJ.

no problem, post some pics while at it - the engine is the same as the YJ/TJ ones but i don't recall somebody here using one here for a swap. Would be nice if you can update with any issues you might run into (i'm curious on the clutch, i used a dakota bellhousing for an NV3550 swap but never found any info on what the clutch assembly is like in the dakota)

Turned out to be pretty easy. We reused the guts of the dist,clutch/flywheel, accessories, the o2 sensor/bracket, oil pressure sensor, intake/exhaust manifolds and relocated the coolant temp gauge sensor from the back of the old head to the empty boss on the new thermostat housing and extended the wire a bit.  Basically everything but the longblock.  :hahaha:

The best part is that the PO put a new clutch on, backwards. That's why it was knocking like mad.  Now i have a spare, heh.
