Starter died today
« on: July 06, 2013, 11:13:20 PM »
  :brick:

good thing it was in the driveway, was messing with the t-case shifters and had to turn it to be able to shift in high/low, completely stopped turning. I thought at first i have a bad connection to the battery, or the battery died, not so. took it out, 2 of 4 brushes were out of service. Good thing i had a core that was dropped and bent (so it broke one of the magnets), luckily the brush plate and brushes were ok (not great so i will still need to order one for the future). Funny thing is that it only "coughed" a couple of times, so should know for long trips to have a spare brush plate in the toolbox (it's easy to replace, the more involved part is to take the starter out).
anyway, that's my rant for today.

Always something to fix.    When my starter went bad it was the solenoid that failed.

trying to find a repair kit or at least brushes, you can get them for the 4.0L starteer but not for the 2.5L

They don't use the same starter?  or at minimum the same brushes?

starter is totally different. From what i can tell the 6cyl has 2 brushes and the 4 cyl has 4 brushes. I called a local parts store and they have nothing listed, $180 for a reman + core if you don't have one (total ripoff), will probably get a new one off Amazon for less than $100.

works well with the scavenged brushes, i'll probably get a new one at some point from Amazon since there's no better option (reman is more expensive).

I played the "tap on it with a wrench" game for a while before I finally went to autozone for a stock replacement.

Why is it that no matter how much you wrench, Jeeps are just incapable of running without any issues (some as simple as a light bulb going bad, but still!) for more than 14 days?

Yep, I've got a page-long backlog of things that probably should be fixed but are not urgent.  Lots of things come up as side effects of mods or things you notice while doing a mod, or due to trail damage. But I like my YJ and have no plans to sell it.

You'll get bored of that and soon wish for the day when you can just drive it and not have to think about other things.
