When did AA add a 21 Spline D300 Input shaft to the catalog?
« on: August 26, 2013, 12:05:26 AM »
I didn't realize that AA started making a 21 Spline input shaft for the Dana 300.  I haven't looked at D300 stuff in a while but it seems somewhat new.  So now that'll bolt straight to a AX-5 now.  Hmm, do a flip and drop in some LOmax gears...   :wall:

it's always been there (at least that's what i remember when i looked into it before getting the NV3550)

if you go that route don't get a flip kit, just flip it with a rail and shifter kit from AA (any D300 would have the rails pitted, fabrication required for the shifters to work or use cable shifters) and buy National seals for the rails (the Omix ones suck, got Nationals this time around and doesn't leak one bit). You'll need the JB conversion spring/ball kit or use 11/32 balls and shim the stock springs (that's what i did).

Depending how much you pay for it might be worth getting an atlas from the get-go
(what i listed is from memory)
D300 t-case ~ $150
AA shifter rail kit ~ $100
D300 Gasket, Seal and shim kit ~ $50
D300 Bearings, shaft & needle kit ~ $75
D300 21 spline Input $155
Cable shifters ~ $200 (guessing, don't know for sure)
JB LoMax gears = $575
JB spring/ball kit = $35
National Shifter rail seals $8
Shipping for all the above let's say $200
Time and frustration - priceless

Total: $1548 or so (if i added them up correctly in my head)
didn't add the clocking ring, that's another at least $50

you're probably better off with an Atlas already setup for 21 spline with 4:1 gears, dunno if they come with shifters but if they do should be a no-brainer imo.

Hmm, I guess it's been more then a decade since I bothered to look.    I haven't seen anyone run a D300 directly behind a AX-5 before though.

Would be interesting with a Blackbox-i mounted to it.  http://www.northwestfab.com/NWF-BlackBox-i-Underdrive-Unit_c_14.html

Then again you could just do a Ford Spicer Model 20 and not have to flip it and use the Blackbox-i as an adapter.

it won't be any cheaper than an atlas 4 speed in the end (would it?).

It depends.  The Black Box is $1700 and an Atlas 4 starts at $3222.00.  So that's $1522 to get a a transfer case sorted.

if you look at the prices i listed that would be about it (if you get the 4:1 gears, all new bearings, seals, etc). Or just go with a 5:1 atlas (i think they have that option from what i recall or close to 5:1).
it's a lot of work to get it setup so not worth it imo. Blackbox doesn't have a 4;1 option so you'll still have to get the low gears for D300 to make it a true 4 speed.

Yeah the 5:1 is a 2-speed and is about $2300.  Just thinking out loud at this point but I'll be keeping my eyes open for a D20 and maybe a D300.  I have a D300 already but it's in another Jeep.

The guy that sold me his TJ AX5 (in storage as a spare) told me he had a D300 bolted to it.

Well, I'm not ready to go all in just yet.  I might not even do anything for a while but I want to keep an eye out for any deals I might come across with the prospect of a project that I could piece-meal.  I didn't realize the D300 has a 21 spline option though.

Speaking of which what happened to Klune?  They don't have a website anymore.  The only reference now is a link to high-angle driveline.

i think the box4rocks billet doubler is a better and cheaper option (you can scavange the parts including input shaft from your 231) and just mate it with a 241OR, the klune adds another 2 or a bit more inches compared to that one. Probably the cheapest you can come to is this option if you find the 241OR at a decent price. I cant recall all the details but i think it's just like the blackbox (not the -i)
just something to look into.

Hmm, I haven't seen many 241OR's for sale, though I haven't really looked.  If a D20 or even D300 can be done for $1500 or less I'd get more cred and that's all that matter, right?

the second one says Dana 20 3 speed but i have no idea what that means.

Tera makes a 3:15 kit. There are some 4 and 4:86 gears avail. but they are crazy spendy!
The idea behind the D20 is to put a reduction box infront of it. In my opinion a box with a 4:1. That way you have more choices in gears combo's.

The second link is a 3 speed manual with a D20 hooked to it.
