Durango Steering Box issue, need some help and ideas PLEASE!
« on: August 28, 2013, 07:31:37 PM »
I purchased a Durango Steering Box to replace my stock one given my increased tire size and the fact my stock one was leaking from every possible place. This is a fairly common swap. All went well on disassembly, until we took a look at the lines and tried to match them to the new box. Firstly, the 4cyl seems to have a power steering sensor that apparently prevents the engine from stalling when turning the wheel (supposed to kick up the RPM a bit). The Durango lines don't allow for that. I need new lines however, and when we tried to plug the old lines into the new box, we found they were too small and wouldn't thread.
Any ideas on how to rig this so that it will work?? I guess, there is no getting around the sensor, so basically I need lines that will fit the box.

The sensor:

A hydraulic shop can see you some bushings that will adapt..

But will that affect the pressure?

But will that affect the pressure?

it will not, pressure would be the same and is regulated by a valve in the pump, a smaller hose or fitting will affect the flow but not the pressure, i doubt that's going to be an issue.

but check to see if the YJ lines fit like Bounty said (probably the better option since it would have the pressure switch thingy on the line and no adapters required)

do the YJ lines have a sensor on them?

But will that affect the pressure?

Pressure no affect.  volume slightly, that could potentially make the box respond ever so
slightly slower but in this scenario you probably could not tell.. The YJ pump provides plenty of flow..

according to Bounty it should (he's spot on usually so i'd say it's a pretty good chance that's accurate) but to make sure take it back to napa and compare with a YJ line
oh, and you only need the hi pressure line (the one with the sensor mount),  the other one seems long enough and if not you can use the rubber from your other pump (it's not high pressure, that's the return so just use regular clamps at both ends).

I said YJ without looking at what model Jeep you're working on.  I'd just use OEM lines for your Jeep.

That's the issue, the OEM TJ line doesn't fit the box. The fitting is too small.
Bounty, you're running the Durango box on your YJ? I checked the number stamped on my Durango box to make sure I have the correct one and it seems folks are using that one. Do you happen up know exactly which box you are running?

It will most likely come down to using the TJ lines and an adapter at the box for the high pressure line.  Probably a company like PSC would have the adapter.

Pretty sure mine is a '99 Durango box, and using stock YJ lines with no adapter fittings.  There is no snow-plow option for '99, that was a '98 option.

What year is your TJ?

I called PSC and apparently TJ/YJ/Xj/2.5l/4.0l fittings are all the same. I ordered a 4cyl high pressure and low pressure hose. I'll see tomorrow.
