hardtop side window seal replacement
« on: October 18, 2013, 08:45:50 PM »
ok, so fixed my hardtops crack, have it back on the jeep, and I start to hear a whistle from the pass. side, the window seal is shot. Anyone have any experience replacing these? A buddy at work gave me a tool he acquired years ago, called the Equilizer. its for removing glass, and another guy from work who did glass replacement for 20+ years lent me a seal removing tool, looks like a bent up pick. he said use that to remove the outer seal, and do the same from the inside, then pop the glass out clean the surface and install the new one. he made it sound real easy, but I'lve never done any glass work before. I want to do this myself to learn how to do it, any advice would be great. thanks!

It depends on which hardtop you have. On the Cj hardtops the seal holds the glass in and on the Yj and Tj hard tops the glass is held in by a windshiel type sealer. I just pus seals on mine but it's a Cj hardtop. The first one was a pain, took over an hour, the second took about 15 minutes. The way I did it was to install the seal on the top and with someone holding the window start on corner then wor the seal over the window (the last 3 or so inches are the toughest). For tools I used a sharpened plastic rod ( actually it was a stake for my turkey decoys) looks like an over grown pencil.
