I don't think it looks that bad.  Better then the Patriot and Compass.  I'd guess it's Fwd with a viscus coupler to the rear.  I would have liked to see more aggressive looking grill, especially with the looks of the Cherokee and to a lesser extend the Grand look the way they do.  Although it sorta reminds me of the International Harvester Scout/Travelall grills.  Kinda simple almost cute.  I think they should call it the Jeepster since the Renegade was a top of the line package and not a model.  I think Jeepster seems to fit it better.

the grill kinda reminds me of the FC for some reason. rear pillar reminds me of the Nissan cube which i don't like but will have to see a more full circle view to realy tell. not a fan of small box cars but the stance on this one looks decent. overall looks better than i was expecting

The Safari roof reminds me of the Dakar concept.  The Dakar is still one of my favorite Jeep Concepts.

WTF are they doing to the Jeep name?! If they wanted a new subcompact SUV, that's fine. Call it something else, though. If they want to revive a Renegade (and I've wanted them to do so for a while), they should get rid of those crap JK trims (the Arctic Blast, the Jungle Fun, The Mountain Pounder, the Curb Climber-or whatever they're all called-nothing more than cartoony graphics on the hood and different stitching)- and they should build a bad ass JK and call it the Renegade. Something limited edition, better than a Rubi, go all out and call it good. This is just silly. It's an oversized Fiat Panda.

GENEVA -- Jeep tomorrow will unveil its new Renegade subcompact SUV.

The name and pictures of the SUV were published Sunday by Jalopnik ahead of Jeep's Tuesday embargo. The U.S.-based Web site said "someone decided to show it early" and cited a source who confirmed that the images were of the new, "baby" Jeep.

Multiple media outlets have posted photos and details about the model today.

The Renegade is key to parent Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' ambitious global growth plans for the iconic off-road brand. It has the traditional boxy Jeep look with a prominent grille and trapezoidal wheel openings.

Built on Fiat's "small wide" platform, the Renegade will be sold only with four-wheel drive, including a Trailhawk Trail Rated version, and will offer both gasoline and diesel engines.

The Renegade is key to Jeep's target of selling 1 million vehicles worldwide this year, up 37 percent from a record 731,565 last year. The model arrives at a time when Europeans are snapping up smaller SUVs despite weak car sales and many U.S. customers are looking to downsize into smaller SUVs.

The Renegade will be built at Fiat's plant in Melfi, central Italy, alongside Fiat brand's sibling model, the 500X.

The Jeep version will go on sale in Europe in the summer and in the United States late this year, while the 500X will be unveiled at the Paris show in October and appear in European dealerships by year end, and in spring 2015 in the United States.

The company has not released sales targets, but supplier sources have told Automotive News Europe that Fiat and Jeep plan annual production of up to 280,000 units of the two models. Jeep's volume will be about 150,000, while Fiat's version will account for 130,000 units.

In Europe, the Renegade and the 500X will compete against small crossovers such as the Nissan Juke, the segment's leader, Opel/Vauxhall Mokka, Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur.

The Renegade comes to market just as European car sales are starting to recover from their six-year slump and amid a dearth of product for Fiat, Jeep's owner. Automotive consultancy IHS forecasts subcompact SUV sales of 640,000 units in western Europe this year, up from 550,000 in 2013 and 345,000 units in 2012.

The Renegade is the second Jeep to be built on a Fiat platform after the new Cherokee mid-sized SUV launched last year.

I bet if you parked a stock TJ or YJ Wrangler next to it, the Renegade would be bigger.  The naming structure is because they have the Rubicon. The Jeep is named after the trail but the trail is named after the river.  And I'm sure the Italians are well versed in their history.  So that's why they have been using the place names.  I never really liked the names like Larado, Islander, Willys, Levi Edition, ect... though.

The Renegade is based on the new Fiat 500L which makes it a lot bigger then the Panda.  Honestly, with a diesel and the Cherokee 9-speed auto, I think it will do well.  People are downsizing these days.  This is why Porsche brought out the Macan abd the Mini has the Clubman.  Not to mention Fiat's 500L (which I think is ugly compared to the 500).  Also, keep in mind that the Cherokee has been outselling the Wrangler since it launched.  I bet the Renegade will do the same.

This is the next 4banger Jeep. There will eventually be a page here dedicated to it and whatever upgrades might become available for it. Im curious about it myself. As a dealer tech Ill be able to see one of the first ones that come out, and if the wife would agree to it, I could possibly see owning one. It looks better than the Patriot, Compass and Cherokee in my opinion, but nothing like this would ever replace my MJ.

I'd like to see one lifted with some 30's or something.  Something like the Suzuki Jimny 4Work.



The 1.4L Diesel is really interesting. 1.4-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder that makes 160 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque.  It's funny how it's 1.1L less then the 2.5L YJ's and TJ's have but has 30 horsepower more and 30 more pound-feet of torque.  Probably gets twice the mileage too.

it's fugly (the Renegade) but maybe the pictures does not do it justice.

Its really too bad they didn't bring out the guns with something like this - Kia (Asia Motors) Rocsta as a vehicle in the US. It comes with 1.8l gas or 2.2l na diesel, 5-sp, ps, pb, front/rear seats, solid axles suspended leaf under....Its looks to be slightly larger than the Samurai, not by much. It does have very identifiable look to it too.
Bring back the size of the DJ5 postal and go from there. Bring back the utility in the US designed Jeep vehicle. Bring back the nostalgia. Yah, its got that look. Offset dana looking axles, closed front knuckles, solid frame, separate body, married tcase, has the look hoodline/fenders of a MUTT M151, top of grille has the vertical slots, bottom has horizontal (MUTT like), and the rear tub is a lot like that of a Samurai.
Jeep/Chrysler were not able to break into the compact SUV market, may Jeep/Fiat can. Maybe not in the US, but some other market in the world where Fiat has a name.
What I find odd is the combination of drivelines. No more can the consumer choose a combination they prefer.

It does have very identifiable look to it too.
Bring back the size of the DJ5 postal and go from there. Bring back the utility in the US designed Jeep vehicle. Bring back the nostalgia. Yah, its got that look. Offset dana looking axles, closed front knuckles, solid frame, separate body, married tcase, has the look hoodline/fenders of a MUTT M151, top of grille has the vertical slots, bottom has horizontal (MUTT like), and the rear tub is a lot like that of a Samurai.
Jeep/Chrysler were not able to break into the compact SUV market, may Jeep/Fiat can. Maybe not in the US, but some other market in the world where Fiat has a name.
What I find odd is the combination of drivelines. No more can the consumer choose a combination they prefer.
Kia had only just entered the US market in 1992 so it would make little sense to fight Chrysler/Jeep over patent rights in a brand new market.  It probably wouldn't have passed emissions, not safety as they were also scaling up during that time.  Then there's the whole diesel stigma that was still in full force back then.  On the bright side, you'll have to wait another year if you want to import one to the US.

Fiat is trying to get into the worldwide compact SUV market with Jeep.  The Compass and Patriot were never sold worldwide.  Probably a good thing too.  That whole Caliber platform was mediocre at best.  The Grand Cherokee and Wrangler are but they are too big for European roads.  Worldwide the SUV segment is downsizing and Fiat has a good chance to get a jump. Jeeps compact lineup in the us sucked.  It made no sense to have two trucks in the same market competing against each other.  Neither had any standout qualities either.  I'm sure the Renegade will change that.  I think it offers a lot over the competition, especially in other countries where they can't have a Wrangler or Grand Cherokee because of size.

I think it is a good idea (bringing out a smaller SUV), but I can't say I like the styling (although, from some angles, it does not look all bad).

The Geo Tracker was really a Suzuki.  The competition is pretty packed, the Honda CRV, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue,Subaru Forester, Buick Encore, Subaru XV Crosstrek, Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, MINI Cooper Countryman, Volkswagen Tiguan, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Nissan Juke, etc...  Then you have to blend them with the compact car segment as well since they crossover.

Now if you single out the quirky compacts, you have the Kia Soul, Hyundai Veloster, Nissan Cube, Juke, Scion xB, Subaru XV Crosstrek, Mini Countryman and Cooper and the Fiat 500 and 500L.  I think that's its main competition.

Now you lose a lot of rigidity when you remove the top.  There's also the safety factor.  Notice how the JK doesn't offer half doors?  It's to pass safety tests.  Ever wondered why the "cage" in a JK is square and not round tubing like in the past?  That's to pass the safety requirements.  One of the concerns is if the NHTSA will soon require side curtain airbags.  having rigid sides is actually a throw back to cars from the 40's and 50's.

If you look at the Jeep concept from the late 90's and early '00's you'll see similar designs.  The Dakar, Willy2, Casablanca, Jeepster, Rescue, Gladiator, etc...  They either had a canvas safari top or a large panel that popped out.  Nothing really new or different.  Though this is the first time it's made it into production.  Probably because Fiat uses a slightly different design on the 500.
