Topic: high output alternator

i am looking to do the durango 160 amp alternator swap on my 1998 tj 2.5 is this a fairly straight forward bolt in swap i can't find much info on putting it on a 2.5?

Remove the old one and install the new one.  That's all there's to it.  You might have to adjust the bushing spacer and swap the black plastic on the alternator but that's about it.

There's my write up in the FAQ.  You'll also probably want to add another wire from the alternator to the battery to help with the load.

i thought i read a post on it on hear once before but i looked and looked and couldn't find it ill look again though thanks.
edit: i found it now my search foo must had been running low yesterday or i just looked over it. i have another question jeffy have you had any luck getting anything bigger then a group 34 battery in the factory location with a a/c equipped jeep also whats the deal with adding a extra wire

The only thing stopping you from using a larger battery is the tray.  There are a few companies that make larger trays for dual batteries.

The extra wire is there so you don't blow the alternator fuse in the Power Distribution box.  Currently there are two 50A fuses.  If your alternator has to charge a dead battery it might push more then 100A through there.  IIRC, you can use a #8 gauge wire and should be okay for an additional 85-150A.  Although I've seen some say #10 is fine up to 200A.  Keep in mind that the length of the wire has to be less then 4' or else you might need to go up a gauge.

Not that I didn't see is that the alternators changes in 99 to  different plug I couldn't find anything bigger then a 120 amp with the older style connector all the part numbers for the 150-160 amp alternators on the facts was the new style so if anyone has a 98 or older they won't bolt straight in

That one may work the only 150 my auto parts store had was the other style

this info is wrong the 150 WILL work they brought me the wrong part out they didn't have it in stock though i ended up getting a 120 amp for a 1994 dodge pickup i will be installing it tomorrow i will let ou know how it goes.

Works perfect. Can't find my meter to see what it actually puts out but shows over 14 volts at idle with new battery it does have a 7 groove pulpy on it but if you put the belt on close to the alternator it works fine I didn't measure it but the pulley looks to be the same size.
