New topic, engine temp.

How is 2.5 at heating up on a cold day. I havent really had any seat time on this thing since i got it. I swapped motor and moved it into my garage. I was playing around with my electric fan last night. This motor has 100k on it. I noticed it takes forever to heat up. Once up to temp it never goes over 200 on the guage while idleing. All hoses get hot, radiator evetually gets hot. It has a new thermostat and rad cap. I can see the temp fluctuate indicating the thermostat is opening and closing. Im just surprised how cool this motor runs. I get good heat from the heater core. I guess the waterpump could have no fins on it? Maybe Ill pull it this week and see.

when you idle it will of course produce less power and as a result less heat, takes longer to come up to temp. If the pump had no fins then it would overheat and not the other way around.

I just find it hard to believe that with no air flow the Jeep isn't overhearing. only reason I think about the pump is no blades no flow to sensor.

in that case it would overheat and boil, no doubt - if you don't believe me take the belt off to see what happens when the coolant isn't moving, but I strongly don't recommend it. I can bet you as much as you want the pump is fine.

as long as I hear someone else say it takes along time I take it as normal

My 97 TJ 2.5l warms faster at idle than my 94. However, my 94 is pushing warm/heat air through the defroster/floor in about 1.5 to 2 miles of 30mph road (before I hit the highway).

I have to have heat on the highway as my 94 door windows to fit under the lip on the doors. Gloves and a hat are necessary!

I can't remember if you can install the thermostat backwards or not (if it fits backwards) - if it is installed that way it will allow coolant to go thru to the radiator and will heat up slow (the coolant pressure will open the cap/spring), the spring should be on the cyl head side.

I don't think I've ever had mine overheat while not in 4wd.  Mine heats up pretty quick.  Maybe a 1/4 mile and I've got enough heat to notice it through the heater.  Though it doesn't get that cold here.  45-55's.  Even in the summer at +100* and no fan, the engine will edge into the red.  That's while coming to s stop from +55 mph with no fan.  Once I got moving even a little, there was enough air to drop the temp back out of the red.

I'm running a stock 195* thermostat though. Going by the gauge my engine runs around 197-200* normally.  Doesn't get much over 210* unless I stop and then the drops once the fan kicks in.  I doubt the gauges accuracy but as long as it's consistent, I'm not bothered.
