One of my biggest wars with the Jeep has been the exhaust...and the exhaust leaks. I've been through stock muffler, dynomax, banks and back to stock. Dynomax and Banks were just too loud. Way too loud. They sound great on my buddy's 4.0s, but on the 4cyl they sound like absolute garbage...loud garbage. I've had holes and leaks that had to welded, cut and rewelded. My current set up is back to stock exhaust. Last wheeling trip, i crushed my tailpipe, happened on two trips in a row. So i cut the tailpipe off right after the muffler and put a turndown, cocked downward and to the side. I havent driven the Jeep in months. Today i took it to test my new 35s and the sound was deafening. Does the tailpipe make that much of a difference? I checked the exhaust to see if it was loose anywhere and it wasnt. Aside from a hole on the top of the cat that i cant see, i'm guessing the missing tailpipe is to blame. Just seems so loud, though. I thought the muffler did all the sound muffling???

Yes, the exhaust pipe does come into play.  Keep in mind that the exit is a lot closer now that you've cut it.  I've been happy with my Borla.  I've had issues with it but Borla has always stepped up and fixed it.  It's rumbly but not too loud or obnoxious when on the highway.  If you think your exhaust is too loud, you could always add a glasspack into the mix to act as a resonator.  Another option is to add a supertrapp tip.  Fix the hole on the cat, it's hot helping anything.

oh, i guess the way im writing that made it seem like there was a hole on the cat. i meant if there was a hole i couldnt see.
what is a supertrap tip?

It's an old school exhaust.  The muffler has attachable disc's you can stack on the end.

Honestly though, you'd probably be better off with a regular exhaust.  Just make sure the tip isn't sticking past your gas tank skid.

I got a banks turndown tip and welded it just short of the rear crossmember and above the skid level

Thought the Dynomax I used years ago was louder than I was looking for.  So I changed to a Borla cat-back, which I've been using for about the last decade, and it has held up and doesn't seem to get loud unless you're WOT and/or high up in rev range.  Around town it's fine.
