Alternator bracket/Engnine build
« on: January 10, 2017, 03:08:47 PM »
Just joined this is my second post (i did search) be gentle. I am rebuilding a motor to go in my XJ, it's an 86 and has a cracked block. I already picked up another motor that i am told is an out of an 86 as well. The number on the head confirms that as well as the number on the block (starts with a 5 so im thinking 85, only has an H though not HX) however this new motor has a serpentine belt and my motor has V-belts. That doesn't really bother my i would rather have the serp belt anyway. Onto my problem, the new motor didn't come with an altenator bracket and there are no idlers (which i believe to be correct, research says you tighten the belt under the P/S pump). Can someone please post a picture of thier bracket as i don't even know what i'm looking for if i ebay one. It has factory a/c and it kind of looks like thier might be an upper and lower bracket? IDK, thanks for your help all!!

Can you post a picture of your engine again.  I can't seem to find it.  I remember it missing the idler.

I'm wondering if it has the same PS setup the 91-95's have.  The PS bracket comes in two parts.  There's a cast aluminum part and a stamped steel part.

My pictures are too big and I'm too dumb to shrink them. The motor is all torn down. I can see the adjust on the p/s pump. Just need a picture of the alternator brackets.

The only year for Jeep Cherokee/Comanche with the V6 was '86. THe '86 only had the V-belt.
The Serpentine was likely a later Camaro or S10 engine, regardless of what the block states........anyone can swap at any time.

Look for a '94 Camaro at the JY........if facing the engine, alt should be mounted high to the left.........brackets will be a dime a dozen.

Just make sure your belt is aligned.

It's a 2.5l 4cyl not a v6. I just need a picture of the alternator brackets from a similar motor with A/C. Hopefully from a Cherokee in the 1986 era style.

Yeah that looks like it would work perfectly. Just ship that whole thing to my house and I'll send back what I don't need. Thanks

They are nearly impossible to find now.

Call Steve here- http://mrcomplete.8k.com/

He may have one, the one pictured here came from him.

The PS bracket looks like it is the same one that 91-95's used.  Should be easier to find one of those then an '86.

For the alternator, could you reuse your existing setup and just change the pulley?
