Acetone in Gas (not alcohol) my fault

Is anyone still putting pure acetone in their gas.  Was wondering what the long term effects of this on the engine is or if it is worth trying with the high price of gas and the supposed increase of milage with acetone used as an additive.

I havn't heard of people putting alcohol in their gas to increase MPG, but i know my dad and numerous other people run a seperate alcohol injection system during boost so they dont blow their cars up. It bumps up the octane rating and lowers air temps good. I know people claim that acetone will improve MPG, but i've never tried it.

you can use acetone or toluene.  both available at local paint store.

toluene worked better for me when i tried it a couple years back.

running too high a concentration of either will lead to the deterioration of the rubber seals in your fuel system and rubber fuel lines.... but realistically you probably won't have to worry about that unless you make a habit of running waaaay too much toluene or acetone.

fuel companies use toluene in the gas already... that's one of their ways to adjust the octane rating.... toluene amoung other things.

a lot of people use alcohol or methanol injection on turbo or supercharged cars while in boost to keep down intake air temps and therefore decrease/eliminate detonation and knock.  totally different that what we're talking about with fuel economy.

my opinion... if you want good gas mileage go buy a $2000 honda civic out of your local classifieds.   if you want better gas mileage out of your jeep, swap in a small block chevy :)

^ haha i know alcohol and meth injection has nothing to do with better MPG, it has a lower stoich then gasoline. I was just trying to figure out what he was referring to. And toluene does increase octane, but it really does take quite a bit to increase it. It's one of the main things in octane boosters also. How much of an increase did you see in MPG using toluene?  I have acetone sitting by my welder for cleaning, but havn't seen anyone really gain any MPG using it.

If anyone does want to buy a civic for MPG, i suggest uberdata and lean that bo-yah! out big time. You can get 40mpg from them pretty easy if you buy an old crx or something light.

I've been running acetone in my gas on and off since last summer. I have to say that with acetone in the tank, I get about 225 miles per tank, whereas I used to get 200 pretty consistently. I usually put in one or two ounces per fillup, with a 15 gallon tank. I have 31" tires, stock gearing, 62mm TB, hi flow exhaust, 1.5 inch shackle lift, so, nothing hugely different from stock. The only change I've made that seemed to positively affect the MPG was the acetone. My last tank was 204 miles and 12.4 gallons, and the tank before that was 225 miles and 13.3 gallons, driving 42 miles to work every day at 75 to 80 miles per hour. Once over a long weekend I was able to push 254 out of a tank, that made me really happy. So, go with the acetone, it isn't any worse of a solvent than gasoline is at those quantities, and let us know what kind of results you get.

in my last bone stock honda i ran the toluene in i mixed it 1 gallon per 13 gallons of gas to fill the tank....  got me on average 2mpg better.  it wasn't worth the time or trouble in my opinion.

i had a 79 civic 1200 i used to autocross that wouldn't run on pump gas due to the high compression... it detonated like crazy.  found myself in a bind one day in the boonies with no race gas available and poured 2 gallons of toluene in the tank and 8 gallons of 93... car ran just as good as it did with 100 octane.

funny you mention leaning out a car to get better gas mileage... i have a neighbor who's car i just tuned with uberdata and he's getting right at 48 mpg with his relatively stock civic.

i've got an awd talon we tuned with the aem ems making over 700 whp that manages to get about 36mpg on the highway......

as long as it's leaned out "right" it's totally safe and will save you big bucks :)

^ niiiice. What turbo are you running on that set-up? I love the old talons/eclispes (I was actually actively looking to buy one when i totalled my h22 accord a few years ago). uberdata is some great stuff for being free. AEM ems is an awesome engine management system, but a lot of people seem to have problems with it acting up (atleast in the honda world, same with msd ignitions...). I really love the import world, there is some extremely smart people along with a lot of aftermarket support. I can't wait till a few years after college when i can get a car to start playing with for scca.

yea if you can weed out the idiots, cocky rich kids, and morons who spread misinformation, imports are a lot of fun.

the talon is running a PT67 (T4 exhaust housing.  if that car can get 36mpg on the hwy there is no reason any modified car tuned by someone who knows what they are doing shouldn't be getting that much or better.

hehe thats why i said some... the're definately is a lot more idiots/cocky rich kids then smart people, but that's how it is in every genre of cars. Some people are either to lazy to try and learn or actually to dumb to learn hahaha. That is definately a large turbo   36mpg is really really good for the highway on a set-up like yours. I'd love to get my jeep to atleast 25mpg haha, we'll see how well that goes later this summer. You run or plan to run any engine management on your jeeper?

And to keep this thread beneficial, i put 3 ounces of acetone in my tank since i just filled up on my way home today. I'll post up how it goes next weekend probably since i dont think i'll be doing as much driving as usual this week.
