Ok.. I am new... and i am about to buy a wrangler....... but a few friends of mine are telling me NOT to get a 4 cyl..... I want some of you honest opinions... I am not really going to be doing ALOT of off roading..... Probally wont even want to go bigger than 33's.... I would like to be able to tow my motorcycle and jetski...
I dont really want to spend alot of money "modding" the engine for power...
And before i get rashed... I did spend about na hour searching the site for answers before i posted.
I just want honest opinon and pros and cons of the I4 vs I6.
Thanks!!
Kyle

Some say that I4 guys are really just 8 cylinder guys who know that an I6 isn't going to match a good "V8"  -- so they just buy the I4.  The first, WW2- era Jeeps came with I4s and when I think of a "Jeep," I kind of think of those.  The I4s in those vehicles did the job vs. vehicles from the Land of BMWs and Mercedes.  I4 is not a Honda-type engine...it actually has decent low-end torque and a none of the sound characteristics of front-wheel drive vehciles you might be familar with.

I6 is a solid engine with good torque (speaking for 91-95 YJs and all TJs).  Mileage, however, seems like it has always been a mofo with it, though.  A few years ago, that might not have been a big deal.  I get 20mpg with my I4 on the highway (and cruise at 80mph; 400 mile range on my 20 gallon tank)...I6 is lucky to get 15mpg, and often-times more like 12mpg highway (don't buy the "18mpg" on the window sticker BS...ask around).

Both I4 and I6 are well-proven, though. And, both will take you where you want to go when you're in low-range.  I dig the I4, as do most of the people here.  But, your friends have a good factory engine with the I6.
The I4 ain't for everybody.

Since you're only wanting to go up to 33's I don't think either 2.5 or 4.0 will be a problem.  Although you will really want to regear the I4.  You'd want to regear the I6 also but you could also live with the gearing off since it has more available torque to sort of compensate.

Here's the deal though.  You'll find that the 2.5L's are usually cleaner and have lower mileage then a comparable 4.0l at the same price.  The 4.0L usually goes for $1.5-2K more.  Although there are two different I6's.  (The 4.2L and the 4.0L)  If I was shopping, I'd look for a 4.0L with 3.73:1 gears.  Auto or manual from 1991-'06.  Later the better.

Baring that I'd go with a manual 2.5L from 1991-'02.  The money you save from getting a 4.0L will go right back into the Jeep for gears.  You'll want to regear to 4.88:1 with the 2.5L.  Gearing will make the biggest difference for the least amount of money.

Well said Jeffy, sound advise.

My little 4 banger has done everything I've asked of it offroad so I won't bad mouth it, but if I was looking for something to pull with I'd go with the newer 4.0L.

Well I think I am pretty dead set on the 4 banger now..... had no idea a few of my OTHER friends jeeps were 4 bangers.... and they do just fine.

so I can expect to get a noticeably better mpg from the 4 banger?

thanks again guys!

If you regear you should be fine.  Mileage is usually around 16-21mpg.  2.5L's that aren't too heavily modified can get into the mid to high 20's.

I was the first in my wheeling group to "step up" to a 4cyl.     Before I bought it they ALL told me I wouldn't like it (I was going from a 304 v8 CJ5 to a 93 Wrangler).  I was a little leary at first but now I  really kind of enjoy it and the feeling you get when the little 4 banger does something one of the "big boys" does is priceless.  With the gearing I have, as long as I have traction it will go where I point it.   :D   Where it lacks is when you need lots of HP for stuff like deep mud or snow but I think the 4 cyl has impressed the v8 guys enough that I've gotten their "respect".

Initially when I bought it I was thinking of a v8 swap but after playing with it as long as I have now, when the time comes I'll probably just rebuild this engine with a few hop up internal parts like roller rockers, cam, ect.
