Hi peepz, im a newby here. First let me thank you for making such a great website dedicated to the 2.5, i been reading you for a while but only now im actually joining.
I'll start with the question: i have a '92 yj 2.5 (off course) im about to buy new axle gears, for now i will have 31 extreme forest kinda thread wich are actually 31.5 inches high.  in the future i might buy larger tyres once i have my car registration updated (yes thats how it works here), i was thinking of putting 4.88. Now i wont use my car every day, but it will happend that i use it for a few hundred kms trip such as holydays or jeep meetings and sometimes to drive to work,  so with 4.88  and 31s is it gonna be that low? in  a way that becomes unberable or i wouldnt be able to drive at 60/70 mph?

I still have stock 4.11s in mine but plan on going to 4.88's asap.  I think they would be perfect with 31's considering my Jeep came with 4.11s and car tires (205x70 r15's I think).  The 4.88s should help out alot.  If they are too deep for your tastes on the interstate (I doubt they will be) take your car instead :wink:

I'm sure with 4.88's and 31's (30.5-7") you'll be limiting speeds upder 85mph.  RPM's might be a little high compared to what you're used to.

yes i read that post jeffy, and its the reason why im asking, considering you mention the optimal gearing with 31 and manual  is 4.56. But the tyres i'll be putting on are actually 80cm tall (31.496 inches) and since the expense for regearing is quite high (once i buy those they'll stay for ever) i thought i'd try and squeeze as much as i can out of it. 85 mph i hardly reach now with 31 and 4.11 so i will be more then happy if i can cruise at 70 mph and still be under 3000 rpm

There are some conversions here for gearing and such.

I'm pretty sure the auto in the 2.5 has 1:1 final gear ratio and the stick has a .85 final gear.  I came up with an rpm of 3173 at 60mph with auto/ 2699 at 60mph with stick.  You can experiment with a tires and gears on the website and figure out what you want.

yes get the 488's.  thats very comparable to the stock gear ratio with stock tires.  i dont know about any one else but i dotn drive my jeep any where over 70 mph.  mostly 55-65.  its a jeep, not a race car.

Out here in CA, if you plan on driving on the highways or interstate you better be going at least 70mph to keep up with the flow of traffic.  Even at this speed you'll want a little more in reserve for hills and passing.

Go for the 4.88s! I got the super 35 kit with a Detroit and love it! I just got it put in weekend before last so I have not been able to punish it to much yet but for the little easy weeling I have done I loved it! I run 33s right now and on the highway I was doing 60 at 2500 rpms.

if i wanna go fast i have other vehicles for that.
