High Flow Cat?

Anyone running one, or have any familiarity with a higher flowing catalytic converter?  I tried looking online and found a lot of racecar applications but none specific to off road.  Now I know the cat could care less what vehicle it’s on, but is there any specific one’s you guys have heard of, or used?

This has everything to do with emissions on my Jeep, and why (sadly) it sits parked.  I’ve come to the conclusion that the cat is bad.  After all that I’ve done to get this thing to pass emissions, it’s still not.  

I’ve replaced the cat once, and I wonder…  if after 3-5 years, is it worth getting a really good one, or just throw a cheapy one on there and move on…

Back when I had my power wagon, I put the "cheapest high flow cat available" from Farm & Fleet on it. Noticable to a point, but that was a 360 with 3" exhaust, so it was a major bottleneck. I also don't know how much the gain was from the cat type or just not being partially plugged anymore.

I run a Carsound HiFlow cat.  The things I like about it is that it's a LOT smaller.  It's stainless steel and bolt-on.  Only cost $114 for a YJ.

I am running a random technology high flow cat but I did the whole exhaust at once hedder, cat, and cat back so I am not sure of the pwer gains from just the cat.It is also stainless and I have passed emissions with it twice but it was more than the carsounds one jeffy was talking about I think I paid about 180 for it.

I gotta say, it's not so much power I'm looking for (but I will never complain about it).  It's longevity, costs and reliability...  I have to assume that cats these days shouldn't pull too much power, and is it really worth the investment of a high flow one?

I'll see how much a stock replacement is too...   But those how have heard me before have heard me say "bigger, badder, better".  I guess I gotta stick with my philosophy.

Wow, KTeller.com has the Carsound High Flow Cat on sale...  It used to be $80.00, but this site says that they will sell it for $79.99!!  What a deal!!

And OMG!  PartsAmerica says no, but NAPAonline says a stock replacement is $91.99.  What are they thinking??

I can buy from NAPA at like 10% above cost, but for a stock one, that's probably $50-$60...  Still not worth buying a stock one.

You'll need to weld that and since it's stainless you'll need someone to weld with stainless steel rod.  I prefer bolt-on so I can bolt-off if it gets damaged.  The biggest problem with a OEM cat is that it weights a lot and takes up a hell of a lot of room.  It also comes with in mm's of the transfer case.  If you don't align it right it will tap the transfer case and eat at the aluminum.

I wouldn't go less then stainless steel since it will last the longest without rotting out.  My cat-back is also stainless and holds up nicely.

The smaller size will keep it tucked out of the way when wheeling, too.

Ok...   here's the latest update on Scott's emissions fiasco…   :roll:

Called up Magnaflow…   Got new, hi-flow catalytic converter in hand…  Soo sweet!  Teeny, freer flowing and real purdy like!  

Called Gibson…  Told them that a bought a rubber mallet designed specifically for their muffler…  Quiets the tinging noises…   Ended up getting a stainless steel muffler from them with a lifetime warranty.  It’s ever more prettier!  I wanna polish it up, but I’m not that big of a geek!  :lol:

So now…  Parts are in hand and installation is next.   I’m keeping the aluminumized  tail section (by Gibson) but a S/S one could be mine for the asking…  I just hate asking the wife.

After install, oil change and another try at it.  

It’s running too rich at idle, so the ignition is back to stock.  Plugs, wires, cap & rotor have been replaced.  Air filter is cleaned and the PCV tubing has all been blown out.  If it doesn’t pass this time, I’m gonna cry!! :cry:  

I’ll keep you updated in the next few weeks.  I’ve got to get this registered before the weather starts to get worst.  I wanna drive it in the snow and rain, not the Nissan.

go with it. it will make a diffrence. i did it one at a time first a muffler, then a cat and then a hedder. all made a diffrence that you can feel and it shows up in numbers on the dino. everything will make a diffrence. how much power are you lookin for. ive seen some sick 2.4l out there.

$100.00 later and I'm on my way to having a street legal Jeep again.

I just got back from local muffler shop and had them cut off the old and replace with new.  When they cut from the furthest forward on the cat and then right at the back of the muffler, it took a custom bent pipe between the two.  Kinda cool S shape, trying to keep stuff up and as high as possible.  I was really pleased with the work they did.

So if the weather permits, I'll take it into work on Monday and run it to the emissions station around lunch time.  

With papers in hand, the Dept. of Licensing gets me into tabs...  and I'll have a legal Jeep for the winter.  

I drove it today with the top still off and the half doors.  (balmy 60 degrees in Washington)

Don't know if I got a bad cat or what, but my Magnaflow Hi Performance Cat only lasted me a little over 2 years. I was highly disappointed when I failed emissions this year and it was all from a faulty cat.  I have a work truck that I drive all day, XJ is for after work hours and didn't see to many miles in that time, could this have contributed to it going bad so soon?

Well how do you lean out a 1995 2.5L with MPI (I have MPI, don't I???)

I certainly don't want to have to do this again... In 2 years, or ever...

Done!  Did it!!  I'm finally street legal again!!   :dance:   :doggy:

The fix was just as a suspected, the catalytic was bad and with a new on I passed emissions.
So after I finished the emissions, I drove to vehicle registration.  $75.00 later I have brand spanking new plates and tags!  I sped back to work (cuz I could ;))  

I was soo excited to bring it to work today.  It's odd, there are a few newer employees who didn't even believe that I owned one.  It's been about 4-5 months since I actually drove it to work.  So now they believe I have one.  

Next thing to do is wheel it.  Since it's legal, it's time to break stuff.
