YJ to TJ fuel conversion???
« on: July 17, 2005, 06:38:42 PM »
I am planing to install some hummer lights in the rear of my YJ next spring, somewhere online I've seen the how-to on moving the fuel cap (as well as the hoses, etc., etc.) to the side like on the TJ.  Anybody have a link or know how?  If I remeber correctly, the stock stuff I got isn't long enough and the writer of this particular how-to used some kitchen sink plumbing (stainless steel) to extend...  Any help?

I was going to install HMMWV taillights but after getting the lights I found they are frick'n huge.  They're a bit big on the back of the Jeep.  If I had the chance, I'd get some Military Utility trailer lights instead.  I believe these are around 3-4" round.

I take it you want to relocate the filler so you can use that pace to mount the light buckets lower so they don't end up visible from the inside of the Jeep.  Here's what I'd do.  Get the measurements off a TJ.  This will help solve problems down the road.  THe problem is if you just mount it anywhere, and then you want to add TJ flares, you could be left SOL if the filler is mounted too low.  All you need is the round cover piece.  I think teh hose can be reused.  Might need to replace it.

Moving the fuel filler can be fun... You may need to get a little help with fuel hoses rated for gas and some adapters. I got my stuff from the the local NAPA store.   My thought was to do the TJ fuel filler but opted to be different.

I can probably just hit up my local parts store then...

Anything I need to know?  Or is it just longer hose?  (The obvious "make sure you don't do this with a full tank" won't be necessary here...lol)

I'm likely going to use the flip cover made for the TJ...

My plan is the lights and the "Off Your Rocker" corner guards.  They can come pre-cut for the HMMWV lights.  As seen in the JP write up here:

http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/70718/index.html

...and yes, they are frickin' huge.... and available in LED

Jeffy, you suggest then that I go with the TJ flares first (likely the route I will go anyway) so that I know where to plant the filler?  Or at a minimum find out how much space I'll need?  Gotcha... don't want to cut good corners more than once.

Thanks!

The problem is if you cut too low and use TJ flares, the filler could end up under the flare.

I built my own back bumper and installed the oval LED's on top of the bumper. (I know it needs painting)  :D

My YJ already had the gas filler moved to the side when I bought it. The filler hose and vent tube look like somebody used two hoses and used a piece of pipe to make them long enough. They don't leak so I'm not messing with them.
