well i always wear mine on or off road.  in a jeep, the doors and top are not gesigned to contain you in a crash or rollover situation.  i would not risk my life that way.  i was on my way home from the dirt track one sat night and i saw a car off the side of the road so i stopped to see if i could help. well, a guy in a saturn hit an enbankment head on.he and the passenger were wearing their seatbelts and the airbags deployed.  she died on impact and the driver (her boyfriend) got his leg broken very badly.  she had two kids that were less than 6 years old.

Needless to say i didnt sleep that night  but i did learn something from that.  if someone can be killed in an airbag equipped car while wearing their seatbelt the YOU dont stand a fighting chance in a Jeep or any other vehicle without a seatbelt.  they might not be the most comfortable thing in the world but when something disatrous happens,  it will help save your life.

I NEVER even leave the driveway without my seatbelt on if i am in the jeep.  there are too many IDIOTs on the road with their cell phone glued to their ear and their radio Blasting some "BUMP" and not paying attention.

Be safe and have fun...That is what jeeping is about

Up until about 2 years ago I hardly ever used the seatbelts. Something changed and now I wear them all the time. I rolled a car a few years back. Tipped it back over on it's wheels and then drove away. This was before I was wearing the belt on a regular basis. For some reason I had it on that day. Guess it's good that I did.

On the trails I convert my shoulder seat belt to a lap belt using a child's seat belt conversion. Its shaped like a 'I'.

I always put the should belt behind the seat to get it out of the way when wheeling.

Only problem I see with that is sometimes the belt will tight through the 'sleeve' that clips in. Then the gravity lock will lock the belt and you can't loosen the tight belt till you get flat once again.
Where as converting to a lap belt, I can clip/unclip all day long at what ever angle. I can get in/out with the Jeep tilted.

Ok, the other trick is to take a binder clip and clip the top of the belt where it loops though the rollbar. 'A' thing.  This will keep enough slack to prevent the belt from locking up when on an incline.

This was before they made those clips for kids.

See that's one of the thing I worry about a bit.  With a harness it typically it will have fixed length straps.  If you're able to move much at all, they're not tight enough.  If their too loose they won't work right.  Although when offroading on some semi hard stuff you will want to be able to see out on occasion.  Most Jeepers I've seen prefer using lap belts only for most things.  Only those really hard core stuff would they dawn their harness.  Otherwise the harness is too restrictive.  Then again with most harnesses, you can use just the lapbelts alone.

picture this...im on a trail with my 7yr old son. Hes riding in the front and i got in a little bit of a sticky situation nothing drastic but in an really bad postion. So i parked it. looked at it and gathered my line like we all have done 1000 times over. I got back in and was ready to start wheeling again...my son all of a sudden yelled "DAD!"....i replied "what son"..looking at him with this confucled look on my face he says ..."moms going to get mad if i have to tell her u didnt have your seatbelt on"....so he doesn't go wheeling with me anymore...oO(rat me out to momma..ill fix his butt)....so i buckled in and as soon as i started to move sure enough the rig took a abrupt change in roll.....so i guess he should come along...

so he got McDs kids meal....i got heartattack and a sence of why i take him

i generally use as much of the harness as i need.  i use the entire thing when on climbs and loosen it when on the normal stuff.  i have the straps so i can move but remain in the bolstering of the seats and then pull them tight if i go to a big climb and start using a spotter.  i have seen regular seatbelts release at the wrong time and i just don't trust them in a roll
