1990 TBI air intake
« on: November 08, 2006, 11:54:56 PM »
I have a 90' 4cyl with TBI- having no experience with throttle body injection, is there any reason I cant remove the air box and throw on an ebay K&N filter/intake?

Also, yesterday I saw a '91 YJ 4cyl MPFI engine on craigslist- assuming I could get it for 100-200 bucks, do you think it's worth my time to rebuild it and put it in?  I've never done anything of that scale but it seems like it could be a good learning project.  The engine mounts are the same and it should bolt right on to my 5 spd- right?  Plus there would be a slight bump in  my HP and mileage.  Let me know what you think.

just look on ebay, you can get  cool air intake pretty cheap, less than 50 bucks, comes with a filter, and the tube,  only problem is the tube is bling bling chrome, but nothing a can of black spray paint couldn't fix.

only problem with your mpi plan is that you would have to change your wiring harness and ecu for the new motor.. mechanically there the same but all the electronics that control the motor changed.
1990 YJ 4cly, ax5, 2.5 inch BDS lift, 31 MTr\'s,  Powertrax-lockers all around, track-bars removed, boomerang shackles, warn m8000 winch, electric fan. [sold but not forgotten]

thanks for the responses, in reality I have no time or money to do the swap, and if I have to do the wiring harness also, it seems like I should just go all out and do a V6.

Also, about the intakes- the ebay ones all say they are for 91-95's, infact I can't find anything on the web about air intakes for '87-90 4cyl yj's- they're all mistaken right?  An air tube and filter should be the same for the TBI YJ's as the MPI's, no?
