RC Jeep - What's Hot for this year?
« on: November 16, 2006, 08:12:23 AM »
Last year, Funrise came out with the Nylint Jeep and Scorpion. What was really nice about these RCs is the functional suspension and 2speed trans to crawl.

My son loved his so much that he broke a front axle in 3 days. Didn't get the Jeep during the holidays, but in mid spring on sale. However, over the 2 month period of trying to get warranty parts and I brought the item back to Walmart for my money. Another month later, I received parts but not the correct ones.

Anyways, anyone know of the new hot RC for this year? (Keep in mind its for a 10 yr old so reasonable cost.) Walmart doesn't have the Nylints any more unless they are few and far between. Toys-R-Us has a similar Jeep Rubicon, but its only a single speed.
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2540523&cp=2269731
Looks pretty good, doesn't have a low front impact bumper so that the tires can climb things, but doesn't have a 2-speed trans to crawl. It has a 'digital proportional speed'.

This one looks promising - http://www.hobbytron.com/RCTruckMonsterTruck110JHC0308.html

    * An abundance of metal parts such as ladder frame, under guard, front guard, leaf springs and aluminum friction dampers are included.
    * Roll bar, road light, front grille, front/rear bumper, side-step, diff guard, wheels and muffler feature metal-plated finish.

ADD LED LIGHTS (SOLD SEPERATELY)
Use Multi-Function Unit (currently in development) to depict working headlights, tail lights and roll bar lights for even more incredible realism. (Multi-Function Unit is planned to include LED lights).

MULTI FUNCTION UNIT (CURRENTLY IN DEVELOPMENT)
Currently in development, with release date To Be Announced, this Multi Function Unit will bring even more enjoyment to the operation of the R/C Ford F350. Featuring realistic sound effects recorded from actual vehicles, controllable LED lights and other movement effects, this unit will greatly expand the potential of your Ford F350.

LADDER FRAME
Durable and realistic ladder frame consists of steel channel and resin cross member.

PROPELLER SHAFTS
F/R propeller shafts feature universal joint to efficiently transmit power even if suspension is moving up and down.

QUICK BATTERY HOLDER

    * Battery held in low position for excellent weight balance and stability.
    * Easy access holder allows running battery to be exchanged without removing body.

    * Metal bearings require periodic application of grease to maintain performance. Separately available ball bearings do not require this treatment, and are highly recommended.

Required:    Size:    Item #:    Packed in:
35    1150    53008    4
4    1260    53065    2
2    850    53030    4

MOTOR

    * This kit is designed to be used only with pre-supplied type 540 motor and pinion gear.

REQUIRED ITEMS (NOT INCLUDED)
RADIO CONTROL UNIT TRANSMITTER, RECEIVER, ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROLLER (ESC), STEERING SERVO & SHIFT SERVO

    * Requires 4-channel, 2-servo digital proportional R/C unit with electronic speed controller with variable forward and reverse function.
    * Use of Futaba Attack 4WD (4ch) or stick type transmitter with slide trim is recommended to perform gear change while running. The Airtronics VG400/600 model radios are also capable as they feature slide trim and self neutral control sticks.
    * 2ch R/C unit cannot be used as it cannot shift gears.
    * PCM type receiver may not be used as it may cause radio interference when using with separately available Multi Function Unit.

ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROLLER

    * Use high power type ESC with reverse function (maximum continuous current: forward 120A, reverse 60A, FET regulation).
    * A high-spec ESC is especially recommended when running on rough terrain.
    * TEU-302BK Electronic Speed Controller (ITEM 45028) is recommended.
    * Not for use with TEU-101BK Electronic Speed Controller.

SERVO

    * While standard type steering servo is sufficient, high torque servo is recommended when running on rough terrain.
    * Use of ITEM 50473 High Torque Servo Saver White or ITEM 51000 High Torque Servo Saver Black will further improve efficacy.
    * Do not use small, large or high-speed servo.

BATTERIES

    * Tamiya 7.2V running battery (ITEM TA201)
    * Eight R6/AA/UM3 batteries for transmitter.

Battery and Radio information
1. Any Tamiya 7.2V battery can be used to power the vehicle. Different milliampere-hour (mAh) values may effect the amount of running time enabled by the battery. For example, 7.2V 1400SP battery should normally enable 10 to 15 minutes of running time. However, please note that actual running time may decrease due to extended full throttle and other high power running.

2. The following 4-channel R/C unit (self-neutral stick type transmitter/receiver) is recommended for optimum operation: FUTABA ATTACK 4WD (T4VWD/FP-R114H) The Airtronics VG400/600 model radios are also capable as they feature slide trim and self neutral control sticks.

Be aware that using an R/C unit without a self-neutral system may increase difficulty of operation. Without self-neutraling channels (spring loaded sticks) the operator is left to center the throttle and steering without the aid of self-centering springs, which makes driving the truck harder than it needs to be.

4-channel wheel-type transmitters can be used with ITEM 58372, but will not be able to be used with kit equipped with Multi-Function Unit (To be released).

PPM receivers are recommended for use with this kit.
PCM receivers are not compatible with kit equipped with Multi-Function Unit.

Other makers' radio control units of 4 or more channels can be used, but may not realize the optimum functioning of this kit.
Recommended use of similar R/C unit as used with ITEM 56511 Tractor Truck Multi-Function Control

Hahah,  sorry Steve.  The kit is great.  It's by a Japanese model company that expended to RC models in the late 70's.  The models in the early years looked more like real trucks and buggies rather then what many call a buggy or truck today.  The trucks are more to scale and look more the part.  I used to have one of teh original trucks called the Bruiser.   It had an all metal frame including the diffs and transmission.  It was really cool.

The new truck is supposed to bring back what they used to make.  This is a new kit but they also have some rereleases too.  I'd love to have one of the trucks but they're too $$$ right now.  It's like, do I want a new Detroit locker or this R/C truck...

Cool, where? You didn't fill out your location on the profile so I don't know where you are at. I'm heading to DesMoine for Thanksgiving from KC, along the way? Doubt it.  Shipping would be outragous due to the overall size.

As for that F350, Once I started to scroll, I knew the $$$ or $$$$ was expensive.

My son is 10yrs old. He has driven the TJ on light obstacles. I was hoping the Jeep/Scorpian would work out once again for 'teaching' purposes. I wanted to go to an auction last Sat for a 87 YJ that was really clean, but alas didn't think I had enough cash in my pocket ($33 wouldn't have done it I don't think).

About that New Bright Jeep at Toys-R-Us, found this little right up
http://www.classicactionfigures.com/Reviews/NB-Jeep.htm. In the writeup is states it has 3 speeds hi and low.

That Tamiya Ford is making me drool - my "inner child" or "21st century adult-ness" or something rearing its head, sorry.  :weee:  Frigging awesome, you need a 4 channel radio so you have a channel to shift gears!  Can go locked, too.

(I had a Tamiya "Rough Rider" [had the Sand Scorcher body, too] clear back in '79-80.  That had, apparently, the first articulating suspenson on an RC car.  Then, in '86, I had a sweet AWD Porsche 959, rally-type Tamiya - shaft drive, awd, early Novak SC [me going aftermarket]. Went gas in the early 90's with a an Associated RC/10 race truck - sweet 3 channel futaba radio, installed push-button electric start, very fast

Course, my kisses of death with any serious RC car were the following: where you run the things, radio interference potential, and transmitter battery levels.  You "total" one of these RC cars at 50mph and its a month before you get replacement parts and have the thing back together [catastrophic if you are a kid with no disposable income].  As an adult, it's a huge PITA, enough stall time to cause you to open an RC shop [just so you can stay knee-deep in wholesale parts at all times] or demote yourself to working on your own full-size cars or trucks.  :uhoh: kidding.

I'd probably give the Traxxas gear a go in this day and age - they are kind of the RC cars/trucks for yuppies.  Very fast, pre-assembled and if you wreck it, just put it in a box and the Traxxas people [in Texas?] put it back together for a steep price and mail it back to you.

After the military's remote-controled Predator drones started waxing terrorists in the middle-east a few years ago, "RC" seemed to finally start gaining some respect.   Frankly, I think with most U.S. HS/College kids in to computer network games, comfortable with "telepresence" and, understandably, averse to getting limbs blown off in combat, remote controlled vehicles are probably going to become one of their weapon's platforms of choice in the 21st century.)

ive never had any huge issues with radio interference but you can get fm radios now that don't get interference so you keep your car on the road.
a moth for new parts ouch i can usually get mine same day at the local hobby store.  transmitter battery levels do suck especially for initro rcs..
