Rebuilding My AX5
« on: December 31, 2006, 12:14:12 AM »
Just got finished rebuilding my AX5 which had a broken tooth on 3rd gear and several teeth broke on the $300 Cluster Gear (counter gear assy) The AX5 took almost 4 quarts of gear oil which is a lot for such a small trans. I was very lucky to find an old AX5 to use for parts which kept my total cost at a $100. This is a job I never want to do again, it's a lot of work.
day 1 pull the trans out.
day 2 rebuild the trans.
day 3 reinstall the trans.
That makes 3 days of back breakin hard ass work! What a great Xmas this has been!, anyway here are few pics.

I just bought a worn-out used trans for a $100 since I just needed the gears, my bearings and seals were almost new. You might really think about converting to an AX15 if your building up your Jeep, running bigger tires & lower gearing, the AX5 is a light duty tranny. You can find parts at several places but cost can add up quickly, I just saw a used AX5 sell for $200 on Ebay, also check the larger forums like MyJeepRocks & JeepAholics. see part links below;

no you need different bell housing from a 2.5l Dakota and a different spline input shaft thing for the t-case.

The AX15 is a bigger stronger version of the AX5. Jeep used the AX5 on the 4banger and the AX15 on the 6banger. They now use the NV3550 which is a direct replacement for the AX15. The AX series are made in Japan but the newer NV series are U.S built in a joint venture between GM & Chrysler, (New Venture)

so swaping in a nv2550 would be that same as putting in a ax15...? bolt pattern and out shaft wise..

I have already posted the info (see link) and is very expensive.
It's much cheaper to find a dodge dakota bell housing.

If you are asking about Advanced Adapters Kit price, that is listed in the post I linked, if you are asking about finding your own parts as many others have, then the price will depend on what you pay for an AX15 or NV3550, new or used, and if you get your parts from junk yards, ebay, etc and what they charge you for those items. The one member on the forum I spoke with who has done the conversion got his trans for $600 and spent $200 on the conversion parts. Myself, I plan on slowly collecting everything during the course of the year, tax returns may be the time to hunt down a used trans.
Here is the info I have so far:
You need a bellhousing from a 96-98 4 cyl dodge dakota. The dakota uses the same 2.5l as the wrangler but comes with the AX15. These are external slave setups. Can be found on www.carpart.com for $65 shipped next day. There is also a difference in the protrusion of the input shaft. The AX5 extends 0.5" and the ax15 is flush with the face of the bellhousing. This will require a 1/2" longer pilot bushing. The overall length of the AX15 is approximately 2" longer than the AX5 as well. So drive-shaft mods or replacement will be required. Now for clutch disks, The AX5 uses a 9" od with a 14 spline 1" id. You need a 9"-10 spline 1 1/8" ID. The closest piece is 9.125" -10 spline 1 1/8". The 9.125 will work fine with the pressure plate, there is enough room to accommodate .0625" all the way around. I dont have the part# handy but the disk is from a: 1984 Chevy Camero with a 4 banger and a 4 spd tranny. It HAS to be the 4sp 4cyl. Its about $45 bucks at napa. The 3550 will also work with the AX-15 bellhousing. All AX-15s have a 1 1/8" 10 spline input shaft and a 23 spine output shaft. So you may also need a 23 spline input conv. sun/planetary set for 95+ NP/NV-231J T-Case because the AX5 has a 21 spline output shaft.
