My New Axle Build Has Begun!!

After quoting a pair of axles that cost more than the Jeep did, I finally got KOZ (the shop that made my bumpers) to make some substitutions so I could get what I want at a reasonable price.

Front axle will be built with the following components:
Axle donor will be a complete high pinion 8 lug ford king pin axle, they will sandblast all components, narrow to the proper width which we will determine. Approx 63"-66"
King pins will be rebuilt
New bearings / necessary brake components
The inner shafts will be narrowed- re-splined
New set of Warn lock outs
New Dana Spicer HD triple seal u-joints
New Precision gear ring and pinion and master install kit
ARB locker
 
 
For the rear axle:
First is using the Solid Axle housing so I'll have a HP D60 rear axle.
35 spline 4340 alloy shafts, full float 8 lug outers
ARB, new bearings / seals through out axle
Disc brake with out e-brake

I have a problem with that last one as I like to have an e-brake....we'll see what he can do there. :D

The Ford Explorer disc brake set-up has a drum on the inside cap.  That offers an E-brake.  

Sounds like a beefy set up though!  You're gonna love those ARB's!!

The problem is that it's an 8 lug 1-ton caliper setup...there happened to be a customer in the parking lot when I was on the phone with him that has a setup he can copy at the same cost....I WILL have an e-brake (I wouldn't know what to do without one....Jeep would be rolling all over the place) :lol:

My fab guy had a customer in his office that had it done...he just went out and looked at his...won't be a problem and the same cost.  It's a 1-ton caliper set up and I didn't want to go down to 1/2 ton just so we could go to a new bolt pattern.

I'm starting to like the idea of 17x9 wheels with an 8 x 6.5" lug pattern!!

A guy in our club runs a line lock for his e-brake.  It works very well and wasn't all that expensive.  (under $200 I think.)  He just hits the brakes, pushes a button below the dash and it's locked.

The problem with a line lock is that it is hydraulic and will bleed off over time.  They are not considered legal if you happen to have any sort of inspection.  Not good for something you plan on streeting.

No inspection here in Michigan...but still no plans to run a line...want my good old handle to pull up on....we're getting it done...

although, I may not have it all done and installed until March...he's moving his shop in the next month...bad timing on my part. :(

I didn't know they weren't DOT approved.  Makes sense though.  The guy in our club lives in KS, which doesn't have inspections either.  His is also primarily a trail rig, so the lock probably serves his purposes just fine.

Well since it's all being fabricated, it shouldn't be too hard to choose brakes that will have a integrated e-brake or you could add one.  I think Wilwood or some other performance company makes a cable actuated caliper that is used for the e-brake.

Matching D60's would be nice.  I'm tossed between standard D60's or maybe a pair of 9's.

E brake lol.. ive never been able to use one of those.... on yms10 (dally driver) the release pulls right out of the dash do if you use the e brake it takes a good 15 minutes to get it off.. and i haven't tried them on my jeep yet..

No comment...it's still very UNREASONABLE for the average person...I just happened to be able to sell some stock last month and my company did very well this past year, so I'm expecting a big bonus next month...in one pocket and out the other....

stupid being a mechanic,  no matter what my dealership does in numbers we don't get a dime.  we used to but then they decided that money could be for them and that was the end of that.
