You can still go out in 2 WD.  YouŽll just have to drive faster to get through.

Nearly everywhere, especially with a locker in back.  Try it some time, you will be amazed what you can do in 2WD and you will have 4WD as a backup when you get stuck.  I used to wheel a lot in 2WD pickups (one had a granny low gear and a limited slip), it takes line selection and speed.  If you always use 4WD you never realize what can be done in 2WD.

I guess when you have driven/ been with people that have re geared vehicles locked front and rear you dont ever consider going 2wd anymore..  Now that I decided to buy a Jeep I have high expectations, my buddy had a 2wd ranger with a loc right, 22 inches of suspension travel and 31's, cut fenders etc, I was unimpressed compared to even my stock Jeep on 31s with swaybar disconnected..
I also wouldnt want to be stuck somewhere wheeling with 2wd and having different gearing in the front as Steve will, lets say he breaks an axle shaft with that locker out messing around in 2wd, now hes totally stranded  because he has no 4x4.  I would say just hold on and wait until the gearing is the same front and back before wheeling so if somthing happens in that rear end you have a chance at getting out somewhat.

Well thats true, it depends on how tough the trail is and 4WD will always be better and safer.  But still, going in 2WD now and then is good for developing skills.

I dont know why your ragging the d35 so hard. Ya there crappy axles and dont like to be locked very much but if your careful and dont act stupid with it you can keep it a lot longer than you think you can. I wheeled my really hard for the past 5 years and it just now broke on me but it wasnt even on the trail. And swapping in a 8.8 is nice, but it will ending up costing you a lot more than $150 or whatever you said. There not a direct bolt on to the jeep and i'm pretty sure they need a different driveshaft. Ive also heard they make your jeep sit up higher in the rear?

this thread reminds me off a friend with a crappy car that hasn't really ever off roaded and all he knows is to go fast and hall ass... id rather go slower and no beat the shit out of my jeep if at all possible.

Try going through mud or silt sand uphill at a crawl.

Point is the faster you go the more things tend to break.  Generally speaking that is...

I just went out romping in the forest, the snow is all melted and there are tons of huge mud pits.  I did all day in 2wd just because of this thread.  It was fun being able to turn with the throttle around corners and you definately need more speed for mud but i don't think i will try 2wd for the rocks (which i like better).  It is nice knowing that 4wd is there though.

I just scored front and rear Dana 44's off of a wrecked wagoneer for 300 bucks!!  I have to drive 2 hours to get them, but I cant complain!
