Topic: Need a part - What other vehicles have the 2.5L?

While changing the oil, I noticed that the bottom bracket on my alternator is broken.  Its the aluminum bracket that bolts through the timing cover to the bottom of the alternator.

Its a 1999, so I hope to go to the local u-pull-it yard to try to find one on another vehicle if possible.  Dealer wants $159.00 for it...  At that price, Ill fab one if I cant find one.

If you look at it from the front, it looks like a long triangle on its side with the big end on the right.  Its about 4" long, maybe 2" thick, and has 2 bolt holes on the right that go through the timing cover, and one on the left that bolts to the bottom of the alternator.  There are no pullies  or other holes, its just a bracket.

I think I got the pics needed. Mine broke and threw the belt while I was shoveling the driveway. I noticed the antifreeze in front of the Jeep. Went a looked and heard the boiling of the radiator. I immediately turned it off. Popped the hood to release the heat and hoped that everything would be ok. Not knowing how long it sat boiling. No oil in the water, no water in the oil. Weew!!! Gotta love the 10* ambient temps.





I had the original welded but it was hard to determine what the material was. On the way home, I visited a local yard recycler and found a Jeep 4cyl on the ground. Got it for $15. I even had the same cost at my dealership for another.


Other models with the 2.5 is the dakota. The bracket is different than the 4.0l. I also added a new alternator with a 120A version for $120. Stock replacement is $108 for a 90A. 

Sorry, I no longer have the old one either. I sort of tossed it once I got the other in. How often would these break?

Be careful, its not flat across the front plane. You'll have to space it where the bolts are.

Right...I saw that.

I made a plate myself.  I drilled through the broken piece whare the alternator bolt  goes through,  bolted a small plate behind  the engine (steel) mount, then put  a longer bolt all the way through the alternator hole and torqued it down.

Mine must have been broken for quite a while as there was plenty of crud and junk in the break.  I dont think it carries a big load, so hopefully the plate will work

Didnt think anyone would be interested...but Ill try to take some tomorrow, and you can comment on them.  I nthink it will work, the broken seam is even tighter than it was before...

Your dealer is screwing you I broke one on my TJ and it cost me $28 new

It wasn't from a Dakota. I went to a shop and pulled up their catalog. The 4cyl TJ had a p/n for a replacement alternator, 90A. There wasn't an upgrade. So I went looking for the same p/n in another vehicle (Jeep) so that the case mounting would work. Found the upgrade p/n for 120A and did the same thing again, looking for an upgrade to that. Found that at 135A.  Then looked at pricing, 90A-$108, 120A-$120, and 135A-$143. Then in looking them over, the case size gets larger so there could be interference as well as pully size is slightly different. So I went in the middle for the little difference in cost and swapped over my original pulley.
I do believe the v8 Grands have a higher output in the 130-150A range, but the case mounting, pulley size and case size all have to be considered.
