My exhaust needs to be replaced and I was going to do the Banks header, high flow Cat from Quadratec, a Flowmaster Hushpower II muffler with a tailpipie made by the local exhaust shop.

Has anybody done this setup before?

Anybody use the Hushpower on the 4 banger?

And lastly would there be significant gains between 2.25" and 2.5" muffler and tailpipe - tonal and performance?

thanks

I'd save your money on the Random Tech Cat and buy a Carsound Hi-flow fat at half the cost.  I don't really like Flowmaster but that's personal preference. (non-stainless steel construction and bad QC)  Make sure the pipe is mandrel bent otherwise you'll get kinks galore which will reduce flow and power.  I'd stick with 2.25" to keep the low-end torque up.  Otherwise, you'll notice a significant drop in torque down there.  If you're going with a Banks header, why not just go with a banks cat-back to compliment it.  Since they were developed together, they are more then likely tuned to work with each other.

Quick Question since we're on the exhaust topic:

I'm currently thinking of swapping out my stock exhaust to something better, the reason being performance. I'm also planning on changing to a cold air intake (AEM Brute force intake- and eventually a stage 1 jet chip) as well so I want the two to work well together. I'm looking at a Borla catback system from 4wheel drive hardware (the only one they list for the 2.5L) Does anyone see any problems with this or have any suggestions? Honestly I just want quality and the best performance out it.

By the way how much difference will a high flow cat or headers (suggestions?) make in performance gains in addition to the catback system?

Thanks and yes I am a bit new at this but very interested!

I like my Borla.  It's basically a straight shot through the muffler.  It's fairly quiet until you romp it.  Although, I can recognize my Jeeps sound easily.  You should notice the engine will feel less blacked up and should have a bit more power in the mod and high RPM.  A true CAI will probably drop the low-end and free up more power up high.  I noticed a big enough difference that I went back to a stock setup since I wanted to tune it for more lower RPM's.  Make sure you get a true CAI which routes the filter far away and has shielding to keep out the hot air.  Cheaper setups that claim to be open element but use a short tub end up sucking in warm engine air which defeats the purpose of going with a CAI.

I also have a Performance cat from Carsound/Magnaflow.  I think it's a good combination with the Borla.  The Carsound is less then half the size of the stock cat which is really nice.  My cat only had .5" space between it and the transfer case.

A header should help a bit more on the mid-higher RPM's as well.  I haven't done this since I'd really like to go with a long header and not a shorty.  Longer setups produce more torque then shorter setups.  The only long pipe set up is the Clifford and the Pacesetter.  Both the Borla and the Banks are shorter setups.  I think they're supposed to be Tri-Y's.  Might be good to go with all one company on the cat-back and header if you're going to go that route.

If you want big, day-to-day horsepower on a 4banger you are going to have to go with forced-induction or a some kind of stroker job.  I'd personally opt for bolt-on, forced induction, since I am no where near close to being an engine builder.  If you want power on your 4banger just to compensate for big tires, it sounds like regearing is the smart, though less exciting option.

I do use the Borla cat-back and its been a good product for me.

But does an exhaust or CAI or any of that stuff give you big smiles like some turbo or supercharged car/trucks on acceleration?  Nah.  :'(  It does sound cool though (which is a nice bonus if you install them on a V8).   Frankly I think the bang for the buck on most of the non-forced induction modifications sold for Jeeps, 4 or 6cyl, is pretty weak. But if your stock stuff wears out, why not, right?

The header/exhaust manifold biz is kind of difficult to pin down.  Stock manifold is ok for torque but horsepower potential is effected.  Seems like the Borla and Banks headers (short tube) provide more horsepower than the stock manifold; but since the tubing on these headers is obviously longer than on the stock manifold, you'd think torque would improve significantly running these versus stock.  Maybe Borla and Banks are underrated for torque improvements?

Then you get in to long-tube headers -- does torque and hp improve across the rev range, 1000-5000rpm -- versus stock? Horsepower for sure. But, Torque?  Maybe it does because the exhaust has further to travel?  Hard to say.

I agree with what Chris was sayng. whether you spend 500 dollars on a name brand catback exhaust or 200 dollars on a muffler shop exhaust you really won't feel much of a difference. You may be talking a difference of 1 or 2 horsepower. If you can justify spending the extra money for that then by all means do it. I, however, will save my money and stick to my flowmaster welded into my stock piping. But hey, thats me

I currently have the banks header and the flowmaster original forty, I have not yet touched my air intake yet since my parts will prob come tomorrow....the banks header is certianly a nice piece... together they are quite loud, i will venture to say that almost every one here would say its too loud for them..I am hoping to get some performance out of the setup when my cold air goes on with the 4.0 TB..

your lack of a cat didn't blow out your muffler's insides.....

don't waste your money on mandrel exhaust piping... it's a jeep for god's sake.. it's slow and with the 4 angry quirrels it will always be slow.  no sense in dumping/wasting money on a $500+ exhaust when the stock piping is PLENTY big to carry your fumes to the rear "bumper."

i like my borla header but almost anything is better than stock.  the "new" banks is supposed to be real nice...

a high flow cat is cool for those of you who care about killing our grandchildren's air (if you don't have a cat you can't smash it on a rock now can you?).....

assuming you actually use your jeep, you will probably smash your muffler on a rock in the next two years go ahead and get the $20 universal turbo muffler from autozone or advance auto... it's cheap, has a warranty, and it sounds just a bit louder than stock... not like a honda, and not like a v6 rustang with glasspacks...  or redneck it up and get a used borla, flowmaster, etc from billy bob at the flea market....

you shoudl call your local redneck shithole exhaust shop to get a price on having an entire exhaust built for you... then get a price on welding up a new muffler and possibly cat... sometimes it's not worth the few bucks you save on parts to get it elsewhere and have the muffler shop install it.   or... buy some exhaust clamps (they were good enough to use fromt he factory, they're good enough to use now) and sawzall your old shit off, clamp on the new shit, and go cruise santa monica blvd for hookers and crack heads :)

PS- don't be "that guy" and run dual exhausts.  k thanks bye :)

Their are a lot of guys in my area running chrome on every available spot on their Jeeps. It makes me sick.

I am currently running 2.25 pipe back to a 2.5 Flowmaster and a 2.5 side pipe on a carbed 4 banger cherokee with no cat.  It is ungodly loud but it seemed to help in the high RPM range, and it is kind of an interesting sound.

I have another 4cyl. cherokee with a knocked out cat, stock front pipe, Cherry Bomb turbo muffler, and a 2.5 madrel bent Dynomax tail pipe.  This one is really quiet but would prolly work really nice with a header.

We used to own a 4 cyl. wrangler that had a borla stainless header, after market cat, and a Borla stainless cat back.  That sounded really good and really seemed to wake up the four cylinder.  It was also probably the best fitting exhaust I ever installed.

My finding concur with his.  It is really noticable when I cracked my borla with a 3" tear.  It allowed me a bit more power at the top end >2.7K RPM but I did lose some low-end as a result. (this is similarly to what I noticed with a CAI then went back to the airbox, too.)
