It's a sickness of mine. I do it with almost every thing I own. with being in auto body I can take something that looks rough and buy it cheap and fix it up. I think I get more enjoyment out of fixing something up then I do using it. I think is kind of like a artist doesn't keep his own work, as cheese ball as it sounds. The bad part is I like to do things right, I never think I will sell it so when i do something I replace allot of stuff that could be left alone which real adds up in the end.
last fall I bought a snowmobile for $700 put a another $1000 into it to make it the way I wanted it drove it 1/2 mile hit a rock and tore off the trailing arm fixed the arm and sold it for $1200 not bad $700 for 1/2 mile not to mention all the nights after work fixing it up and the 4 trips to the eye doctor for the metal in my eye from drilling out a rivet.
I also made the jeep to nice I like it before when it was ugly, when I could drive threw brush and not care. I put to much work it to it to deprecate it like that.
