Topic: alignment issues

So I tried to do my own alginment today and followed the instructions from http://www.4x4xplor.com/alignment.html I can't seem to get my tie rod bar to move any. I keep trying to budge it with a pipewrench but no luck, any ideas? Also, does anyone know how much a shop would cost if I can't get it to work? Thanks

Soak it good with pb blaster. At work I bang the sleeve with a air hammer and a flat bit loosens them up quickly.
For you heat/torch and pb blaster ought to do the trick. If you get it loose buy antiseize and coat the threads will make it easier the next time

Arrrg! this is driving me nuts, won't budge. I knew I was in trouble when the nuts on the sleeves came off easily. I thought this was gonna be a peice of cake. Really don't want to have to take it to the shop.

Soak it for a day or two with a good penetrating fluid then where the clamps are hold a hammer on one side and whack the other side with a hammer ( opposite of the first hammer) with a bit of luck and a big pipe wrench it will let go

heat it up alot nd u'll be set  works everytime,  that show we get the super dutys at ford aligned, nd a jeep anit nothing compared to a super duty

I don't have anything to heat it up with, but I can definatly try the hammer trick. Will I know when it gives, I mean will it move freely enough that I will know it, or am I just not quite strong enough to move it with a pipe wrench? I have to get this done, I just added some coil spacers and want to get it aligned. Not to mention that while I was working on my jeep my parents neighbor came out and asked what I was doing. He seemed a bit amused at a woman trying to do her own alignment.

Soak it overnight with penetrating oil.  Try vice-grips and set them really tight.  Make sure both collars are loosened.  There is a tool for this but usually you don't need them.  The tool grabs the slot on the end of the rod and turns it.  Put the penetrating oil into that slot.

Steering alignment usually costs around $30-80 depending on where you go.

nd vise grips aint gonna hold it.  unless its really free.  pipe wrench nd a piece of pipe over that nd really soak it goooooddd.....  or goto home depot nd buy a little propane torch there like 30 bucks, then u can heat up ur exhaust nd steering kill two birds with one stone

I did that alignment on my Cherokee.  It is hard to get it properly aligned, I still have a little vibration in the front end.  For all the trouble you may have with it and cost of more tools, I say it is worth it to take it too a shop.

PB blaster a couple times, soaking overnight.  Then a pipe wrench should do it.  Carefull with the pipe wrench that it's not squeezing the adjusting collar even tighter, you have to move the pipe wrench around on the collar so the jaws are pulling it open and not crushing the pipe.

Bingo!! This did the trick, she rides nice and smooth now. Thanks guys!!!!
