Topic: Blew something up

Took the YJ out for it's first trail ride and blew something up.  I was going up a narrow chute with the RPM's up fairly high, heard a big clunk and then the engine died.  Seems like either the flexplate or the crankshaft broke.   Planning a trip back over to Wisconsin to pick it up today so I can figure out what I did to it.

That sucks.  I hope it doesn't come out too expensive to fix.

i feel your pain. finally got to go off roading in the heap the other day and blew a tire. then my lug wrench broke on the second lug nut of taking off the spare. couldn't even put the flatty back on. had to wait for almost three hours for someone i know whop's rig could get where i was. he even hit me up for gas $!!! oh well...

I hope it's not your crank. A flex plate is easier and cheaper to replace. Let us know what you find.

WOn't find out until tommorrow.  I was going to tow dolly it home with my wifes car but the tires are too big.  So I borrowed a 1 ton and a trailer for tommorrows trip

4.3 is a 90 degree v6, won't work with the AW4.  A 3800 is a 60 degree though, and so is the Northstar, shortstar, etc.   I've had a thought of a supercharged 3800, plenty around. But for now I'm hoping for a cheap fix.

Lucky you. It didn't squeek or tunk for a bit? They generally make some noise before they completely let go, but then its hard to hear over the tire sing song

Took it all apart last night.  I think I'm going to try to modify a cherokee flexplate this time since they don't have all the speed holes

It tore that thing up pretty good, one with a bit more meat should help also were the holes you drilled centerd to the center line of the flex plate. The all powerfull 4 banger should not really tear that flex plate up so easily. Flexplates crack and rip but it is relatively uncommon

The holes were drilled on a CNC Mill by a friend of mine, they were perfect.

That would definitely be the way to do it, and the hub on the torque converter is a snug fit in the crank?
of nothing binds it has to be one torque producing 2.5
