Hey 2.4L guys

Any TJ 2.4L guys on here?  Have you all found any bolt on mods that help at all in the power dept.  I am going to regear, and I'll be ok power wise, but if the motor responds ok to some bolt on's I wouldn't be against doing them.  So anyone have any luck?

I left the engine alone and just regeared it has adequate power with 33" tires
If I want more I guess it would be time to do a turbo pt cruises shoe horn job

Any idea what year got the 4.56 gears?  I'm thinking it was 2004, but it may have been 2003.  I have 35's on mine noiw with the stock gears and it does fine.  A bit slow on the highway, but great around town.

The first year of the update, 2003, was carry over from the older TJ's.  So Auto's got 3.73 and manuals got 4.11's.  The next year they changed to 4.56's in both models since the automatics had OD.  Then they went and changed it to 3.73's the following year.

Right on, thanks Jeffy!  If I was able to I'd give you a karma point :weee:I knew there had to be a reason this little motor was pushing 35's so well.

Are you running 35's on the D35?
02 2.5.L automatic: 4.0L t.b., 4.0l air intake, K&N filter, Scream'n Demon coil, 8.5mm MSD Super Conductor plug wires, Stage 1 Jet Chip, 29" BFG all terrain KO's. Taurus E-fan, Hummer front bumper, Skyjacker high capacity trans pan, 48" hi-lift, Rubi susp w. 3/4" BB.

Yep,  Knock on wood, but I have never had a problem with any of my turdyfives.  My last TJ I ran 36" bias ply TSL's with a lockright in the back and never had a problem.

4.88 gears, lockright, 36" TSL's plus a 5K clutch dump







I miss that jeep :'(

You've been lucky so far then. Is it a stock D35? The way my luck goes I'd grenade it as soon as I put anything larger than 30's on.

Yep, stock shafts.  The sand and the mud don't seem to be real hard on shafts.  4 bangers also seem to break alot less stuff.  In any event I always have spare shafts close by.I have had either XJ's YJ's or TJ's for about the last 12 years and never had any issues with dana 35's.....

On the gearing issue I ran the BOM numbers on my axles and they came with 4.10 gears.  The research I have done indicates that in 2004 manual 5spds came with 4.10's and anuto's came with 4.56's.

Can you verify it with an actual turn count or even better a look see?  The D35's are called C's because they come from Dana unfinished.  I forget what gets done to them at Jeep, offhand though.  Since 2004 was a minor change, it's really hard to tell without actually looking at them.  You get a lot of weird things that aren't official in transition years as well.

Case in point, in 1995 all the 4.0L's were going towards the XJ and ZJ.  This is why there were very few 4.0L YJ's in '95.  What most don't know is that the 3.73:1 geared axles were going towards them as well.  So you sometimes get 2.5L Auto's with 3.07's.

I can't imagine turning 35's with 4.10's really well though.  I turn 35 with 4.56's and its OK but not great.
