Not Jeffy's dream YJ

Jeffy this looks like something you would get a kick out of . Found it through rof, it led to a fellow offroader in Belgium that did some competion in Italy. Flatfenderd long armed with portal axles everything you ever wanted in a YJ

I don't know, it's not very photogenic is it?  I'm not really a fan of the paperthin fenders and those tires won't do well on rocks...Chicken wire windshield?  Extra grab handle on the grill?  And coils!?!  I'd never do coils!

I think what really kills the deal is the orange jumpsuit though.  BTW: I've changed my mind about the Volvo's.  Gearing is too low for an engine swap I want.

Nope, I'm not a fan of the MK1 Ford Focus...  I don't think it would be safe towing the Jeep either.  Going V8, just makes more sense for what I need.  I'd be able to stick with 87 octane and it would get better gas mileage then my 4 since I wouldn't have to wring it out.  Displacement on Demand is also nice.

Actually there is another solution that might give you pretty much what you want .
If you are happy with the suspension, your axles give you enough ground clearance why not consider a stack 3 speed transfer case? see if you can get a 1-1 gear a 75-80% undersrive and whatever crawl ratio you desire and it will pretty much give you a high range a power range and a nice crawl ratio when in the rocks. You will still be stuck with the little put put engine bit you will have all the gear choices to do what you want on the highway or off and I think it would be the easiest most cost effective way to achieve your objective

I was checking into a CJ10a tug to use as a doner (for the 6banger Diesel)... got to looking at HP and torque #s
It's not worth all the work...
I'll keep the 4banger(s) thank you.

(I was just hinting at a 4banger communter not directly an SVTf.)

Mine  is pretty much done. (Any breakage will be subject to upgrade though.)

Good Luck!

Well, my current axles are a 30/44 so I'd have to regear the 44 and get a matching 44 as well as spend $3000 on the Stak 3-speed.  Getting a new axle would also necessitate new wheels as well.  A sub 5000mile '07-'08 is around $37-4200 and I could keep my existing wheels and D30 for the time being.  I'd eventually swap out the front axle, change the wheels and change the transfer case as well but probably not right away.

For the most part the suspension is done.  I'm sticking with 35's as well. :wall:

With the highway speeds here at 70mph, it's tough to justify keeping the engine.  I don't have room for a tow vehicle.  Actually, I've got access to two if I had to have one.  I just don't have a tow bar setup yet.  (That's on the to do list as everyone should have one.)

I've driven a Focus and got bullied around.  I didn't like how it handled at high speeds either.  Seems to shake a lot more with crosswinds.  Although I wouldn't advise going three figures.

I have a 16' tandem axle trailer and access to several trucks for towing purposes... But I would rather drive the Jeep to and from the trail.

As far as the focus goes ~ I wanted another VW but got too good of a deal on the SVT with supplier discounts etc. (The SVT > std. focus by far...) Plus I read this: http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20020627/FREE/206270703&SearchID=73296936812950

Specifically this-> Even through our 490-foot slalom, the tires exhibited almost zero tire squeal, and the car simply flies through the cones with almost no body roll. Its 47.3-mph slalom speed beats the Sentra SE-R's by 1.3 mph, the Mercedes-Benz AMG C32 by 2.2 mph and even the Subaru Impreza WRX by 1.3 mph, and slots it close to the Porsche 911 Carrera's 47.5 mph.

I don't trailer my Jeep anywhere.  Last time I took it for a long trip, I ended up doing over 2000 miles.  It will do jaunts in the 500-700 range fairly easily but it's a bear having to keep up with traffic.  70mph is on the low end.  Big rigs do 70-75mph.  SUV's are usually zipping by at 80-85mph.  So drive at 65mph and you become a road block for everyone.  It doesn't help that there are only two lanes either.  When the roads widen up to 4 it's a lot easier to cruise at 65mph.  The gearing though it not anywhere near optimal on the open roads. Wind is one of the biggest issues.  Since the torque band is small, a gusty head wind can drop 5-7mph off in an instant.  Having to regain it is a slow and painful process.  One stretch called the 'Grapevine' on I-5 heading into the LA Basin is a real killer.  Last time I was chugging up the hills at 50-55mph in 3rd gear with the RPM at 4000.  Actually with my old ignition the exhaust tone would resonate inside so it's not too bad now.  That stretch really tests out your engine and gearing though.

Another thing I want to do is install A/C.  I've never had AC in any car I've owned.  Since my windows don't open unless you open the door, since the cranks hit my roll cage, you can't open and close them on the fly.  I'd also like to go with an automatic this time.  I might go with a reverse manual body so I can shift though.  It's just a lot easier to use an auto in the swap here.  90% of the donors are auto's so it's easy to find a matching pair.  Although I'm not up on my auto's.  I know the older gen with the 4L60e and the 4L80e but there is also a 6L90 6-speed auto.  I'm not sure if there are aftermarket stuff for them yet.  The engine I'm looking at is the GM LY6 6.0L (345hp/370lbs-ft).  I think that should be enough engine.  This will allow me to keep my 4.56's and still have plenty of power at hand.  I believe the lowest GM ever gears their trucks is to 4.10 and that's usually an option.  Most got for 3.55 or 3.73's.  Anyway, I'll need a second car before I can get the swap done.  I'm thinking STI.

Cones are a bit different then a road course of highway though.  Smaller lighter, no boost is a big advantage.  My friend used to autoX his Golf.  Now he's got a Rex.  It's sad that we get stuck with the MKI while everyone else has had the MKII for 3 years now.  I believe they finally introduced the MKII for 08 but axed the hatch.  Problem is the MKII is larger and Ford USA needs a small car.  Although they could bring back the Festiva.  The UK version is pretty hot.

Nah, Jeffy.  Don't get an STI.

That car has probably single-handedly "raised" a billion dollars in citation revenues for municipalities across the country   Its not like a Corvette or a 911 -- fast cars that you can do the speed limit in and not feel like a knucklehead.

With the STI, uninitiated folks see a sedan with a spoiler.  They don't know you have sweet performance car until you smoke them at a stoplight, blow by them on the highway at 130mph etc.  So you are going to be driving that thing fast all the time just to feel good about making the payments.

If ya have to get a second vehicle, why not get something you can tow the Jeep with?
