Master install kits needed to put in new ring & pinion???
« on: October 30, 2007, 12:36:14 PM »
I am picking up some 4.88 gears tonight for my lift project at complete offroad here in Dubuque IA.  They have Yukon gears for $154.00 per axel, or the have a special TJ package that includes front and rear ring & pinion sets with two master install kits for $389.00 as a package deal thingy.  Is it worth the extra $80.00 to get the two master install kits, are they really needed when changing out the diff gears, I am having the gears put in at a local jeep dealer btw.   Otherwise the master install kits purchased seperatly are $82.00 per axel.

They are a good idea, that way you have all new seals, bearings and every shim you might need. Plus you'll get a new crush sleeve if it's applicable to your axles. $80 is a deal for 2 kits.

Great deal!  The gears will very likey be in there for a long time so it is worth it to start out with new parts.

I think I paid around $50 for mine.  That was a few years ago though.  It better come with new carrier bearings .  A master install kit is not an optional thing.  You will defiantly need it.  It will come with Shims for the carrier and pinion, bearings, setup grease and a brush.  It will also come with your crush sleeve but the gears should also come with one if they are required to have one.  So you end up with two.  This is a good idea in case you happen to screw up.

Good idea!!  I went through 2 crush sleeves puttin 4.88's in my TJ.  Next time the whole assy is bein worked on on the bench.  When I set my pinion depth and back lash to spec. my drivetrain ended up noisy!!  I contacted Yukon gear and the said that was normal and that I could go ahead and set my backlash out of spec say around .018-.024".  I decided to stay within spec and live with the gear noise.  Of course after I double and tripple checked my measurements.

The master install kits have all the bearings, bolts (for the ring gear) and shims... the installer will need all that stuff to do the job correctly.

The assumption that master install kits come with all the shims to adjust preload and back lash is wrong.
The kit comes with just bearings, a seal and a crush sleeve when called for as well as some paint and a new pinion nut.Especially on a dana 44 the shims for the backlash adjustment are kinda pricey

All 6 or 7 master install kits that I've bought have had pinion and carrier shims.

All the stuff should be there hence the the name "master install kit". Buy from a reputable shop and the contents are not an issue.

I ordered from complete off road, 4.88 for dana 30/35. They shipped it out right away. We installed the rear on 11/30 and the front will be done 12/6. What a difference. Need to get the front done so I can go wheelin.

My install was done at a tranny shop and I did the work w/alot of help from my friend who owns the shop. I talked to him about the price of the complete off road deal. He could not beat it and I saved $$$$.

Gears were Yukon and the kits were yukon/timken

Thanks Boogie444 for the info!
